1500 Classic - Taillight Bulb Replacement 💡

Good news: on your 1500 Classic, the taillight bulbs are easy to reach from outside by removing the taillight assembly.

Quick check: Are you replacing the outer main taillights on the bed (not the center high brake light above the rear window)?

If yes, follow the steps below. If not, tell me which light you mean and I’ll adjust.

Parts You’ll Need 📦

  • 🔧 Bulbs (rear outer taillight assembly):
    • Tail / parking / brake bulb: typically a dual‑filament bulb (e.g., 3157 type)
    • Turn signal / reverse bulbs: may be separate bulbs depending on exact lamp design

Because bulb types can vary by build, check the numbers printed on your existing bulbs before buying, or your owner’s manual bulb chart.

  • 🧤 Disposable gloves (keeps skin oils off glass bulbs)
  • 🧽 Clean rag (to wipe dust from housing and seals)

Tools Required 🛠️

  • 🔧 1/4" drive ratchet (small hand wrench that accepts sockets)
  • 🔧 Torx T25 bit or driver (star‑shaped screwdriver tip; Ram uses Torx screws on the taillight)
  • 🔧 Small flat trim tool or flat screwdriver (to gently pry if the lamp is stuck; wrap tip with tape)
  • 🔦 Flashlight (helps see the bulb sockets and tabs)

Safety First ⚠️

  • 🛑 Ignition OFF and lights OFF before you start.
  • 🔋 You don’t have to disconnect the battery, but do not press the brake pedal or turn lights on while bulbs are out.
  • 🚗 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and keep the truck in Park.

1500 Classic - Remove Taillight Assembly (Each Side) 🔩

Do one side at a time so you can use the other side as a reference.

  1. Open the tailgate 🚪
    • This exposes the inner edge of the taillight and the mounting screws.
  2. Remove the two vertical screws 🔧
    • Locate the two Torx screws on the inner edge of the taillight (facing the tailgate).
    • Use your T25 Torx driver and turn counter‑clockwise to remove both screws.
    • Set the screws somewhere safe; you’ll reuse them.
  3. Pull the taillight straight back 📦
    • The outer edge is held by plastic alignment pins that push into clips in the bed side.
    • Grip the taillight with both hands and pull it straight back toward you, not sideways.
    • If it’s stuck, gently wiggle while pulling. You can use a at the outer edge, but do not pry hard or you can crack the housing or paint.
  4. Support the taillight
    • Once it pops free, support it with one hand so it doesn’t hang by the wires.

1500 Classic - Replace Bulbs 💡

The back of the taillight has several bulb sockets. They twist out.

  1. Identify which bulbs you’re changing 👀
    • From top to bottom you’ll typically see:
      • Upper socket: tail / brake (dual‑filament)
      • Middle socket: turn signal or reverse (varies by lamp)
      • Lower socket: reverse or additional function
    • If you want all taillight bulbs new, you can replace each one while you’re here.
  2. Remove a bulb socket 🔄
    • Grasp the socket body (plastic piece where wires go in).
    • Turn it about ¼ turn counter‑clockwise and pull it straight out of the taillight housing.
  3. Remove the old bulb 🧯
    • Most bulbs are push‑in wedge style:
      • Hold the socket and pull the bulb straight out.
    • If it’s a bayonet style (with small pins on the side), push in slightly and twist counter‑clockwise, then pull out.
  4. Install the new bulb
    • Match the new bulb’s base to the old one (same pin layout and size).
    • Push the new bulb firmly into the socket until fully seated.
    • Avoid touching the glass with bare fingers; use gloves or a clean rag.
  5. Reinstall the socket into the taillight 🔁
    • Align the tabs on the socket with the slots in the housing.
    • Insert the socket and turn ¼ turn clockwise until it stops. It should feel snug.
  6. Repeat for any other bulbs 🔄
    • Do the same process for the other sockets you want to replace.

1500 Classic - Reinstall Taillight Assembly 🔙

  1. Check the rubber seal and pins 👓
    • Inspect the foam or rubber seal around the taillight; make sure it’s clean and not folded.
    • Check the plastic alignment pins on the outer edge; make sure they’re not broken.
  2. Position the taillight 🎯
    • Line up the outer pins with the holes in the bed side.
    • Keep the wiring harness inside the cavity, not pinched.
  3. Press the taillight into place 🤝
    • Push the taillight straight in until the outer pins snap into their clips.
    • The inner edge should sit flush with the bed side and tailgate opening.
  4. Reinstall the two screws 🔧
    • Install the two Torx screws by hand first to avoid cross‑threading.
    • Tighten with the T25 driver until snug. Do not over‑tighten—they’re going into plastic.
    • Typical torque is about 20–25 in‑lb (2–3 N·m), which is just “snug with two fingers” on a small driver.
  5. Repeat on the other side 🔁
    • Do the same steps for the other taillight so both sides match in brightness and color.

Test Your Lights ✅

  • 💡 Turn on the parking lights (taillights should glow on both sides).
  • 🚦 Press the brake pedal (have a helper or use a stick on the pedal) and check brake lights.
  • ↩️ Test turn signals and hazard lights.
  • 🔙 Put the truck in Reverse (foot on brake, engine running, parking brake on) and check reverse lights.

Tips & Tricks 🧠

  • 🧽 If there’s dust or moisture inside the cavity, wipe it out before reinstalling the lamp.
  • 💡 Consider using long‑life bulbs so you don’t have to do this again soon.
  • 🧤 If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with alcohol and a clean cloth to remove oils.

If you tell me exactly which bulbs (tail/brake, turn, reverse) you’re changing, I can give you the exact bulb numbers and any LED upgrade notes.
