🔧 CX-5 - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your CX-5, some rear light functions use replaceable bulbs (commonly reverse and rear turn signal), while others may be LED and not serviceable as a “bulb.” The job is mostly removing the rear lamp(s), swapping the correct bulb, then reinstalling without breaking the locating clips.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

Quick check (so I guide you correctly): Which light is burned out—rear turn signal, reverse, or brake/tail? And are you doing both left & right sides?

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • ⚠️ Turn the lights off and let the lamps cool before touching them.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Support the lamp while loosening fasteners so it doesn’t drop and crack.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear bulb (match type printed on old bulb base) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
  • Rear lamp mounting clip(s) (if any break) - Qty: 1-2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Open the liftgate for access and good lighting.
  • Verify which function is out: turn signal (use hazards), reverse (have a helper hold brake and shift to R), or tail/brake (headlights on + press brake).
  • Lay a towel on the bumper corner under the lamp area to protect paint.
  • Read the bulb number off the old bulb.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which rear lamp section you’re removing

  • Use a flashlight and look at the lamp layout: the CX-5 rear lighting is split between the body (quarter panel) and the liftgate.
  • If the burned-out light is the reverse light, it’s typically in the liftgate lamp.
  • If the burned-out light is the rear turn signal, it’s typically in the outer body lamp.
  • If it’s brake/tail and your CX-5 has LED for that function, there may be no replaceable bulb (the lamp assembly is replaced). Tell me which function is out and I’ll confirm your exact setup.

Step 2: Remove the access trim to reach the lamp fasteners

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop the small access cover(s) near the rear lamp area inside the cargo/liftgate trim (depending on which lamp you’re servicing).
  • If a push-clip is tight, use the trim removal tool to lift the center, then pull the clip out.

Step 3: Remove the lamp retaining nuts/fasteners

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the lamp retaining nut(s).
  • Place the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trim.

Step 4: Pull the lamp assembly straight back (don’t pry the painted edge)

  • Hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward to release the locating clip(s).
  • If it’s stuck, gently work it free by hand—avoid levering against paint with a screwdriver.
  • Pull straight back to avoid breaking clips.

Step 5: Remove the bulb socket from the lamp

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and remove it from the lamp housing.
  • If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for grip (avoid pliers on the plastic socket if possible).

Step 6: Replace the bulb (match the old one exactly)

  • Pull the old bulb straight out (or twist/pull if it’s a twist-lock type).
  • Use the flashlight and read the bulb number printed on the bulb base, then install the same type new bulb.
  • Add a tiny smear of dielectric grease on the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
  • Reinstall the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise until fully seated.

Step 7: Reinstall the lamp assembly

  • Align the locating pin/clip(s), then press the lamp straight into place by hand.
  • Reinstall the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet, tightening them snugly (do not overtighten—these studs can strip).

Step 8: Repeat on the other side (for “both bulbs”)

  • Perform the same removal and replacement steps on the opposite rear lamp using the same tools.

Step 9: Reinstall trim covers/clips

  • Reinstall any access covers and push-clips by hand.
  • If needed, use needle-nose pliers to straighten a clip, then press it in.

âś… After Repair

  • Test the repaired function: turn signals (hazards), reverse lights, and tail/brake lights.
  • Confirm both left and right sides match brightness and flash rate.
  • If a turn signal now “hyper-flashes,” a bulb may be the wrong type or not seated.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,000-₹3,500 (parts + labor)
