How to Replace Taillight Bulbs on a 2019 Ford Ranger (Both Sides)
Step-by-step removal, bulb socket access, LED vs bulb check, tools list, and safety tips

🔧 Ranger - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Ranger, the taillight assembly must be unbolted from the bed to access the bulb sockets. If your truck has LED taillamps, the bulbs are not serviceable and the entire lamp assembly is replaced instead.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- 🔥 If lights were on, let the lamp cool 5-10 minutes.
- 🧼 Do not touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim removal tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Clean microfiber towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear taillight bulbs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🚪 Lower the tailgate to access the taillamp fasteners.
- 🔎 Quick check: if your lamp has no twist-out bulb sockets (only wiring going into a sealed unit), you have LED lamps and you’ll replace the full taillamp assembly instead of bulbs.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open access and locate the taillamp bolts
- Lower the tailgate.
- Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" socket extension to locate the two taillamp retaining bolts on the inside edge of the taillamp (they’re visible with the tailgate down).
Step 2: Remove the taillamp assembly
- Use the 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove both bolts.
- Grip the taillamp and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- If it feels stuck, use a trim removal tool to gently help it pop free. Pull straight back, not sideways.
- Tightening note: Ford does not always publish a torque for these small lamp fasteners; reinstall them snug (do not overtighten into plastic).
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Behind the lamp, identify the socket for the bulb you’re replacing (each bulb has a twist-lock socket).
- Rotate the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- A “socket” is the plastic holder the bulb plugs into.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If the bulb is halogen glass, use a clean microfiber towel so you don’t touch the glass.
- Optional: apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal to help keep moisture out.
Step 5: Reinstall the bulb socket and taillamp
- Insert the socket into the taillamp and rotate clockwise until it locks.
- Align the taillamp’s locating pins with the body holes and press the lamp straight forward until fully seated.
- Reinstall the two bolts using the 8mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet, tightening snug (do not overtighten).
Step 6: Repeat for the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-5 on the other taillamp to replace the second bulb.
✅ After Repair
- 💡 Turn the ignition ON and test the lights you worked on (tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals).
- 🔁 If a new bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket again and confirm the bulb is fully seated and the socket is locked.
- 🌧️ After your next car wash or rain, check the lamp for moisture; reseat the socket seal if needed.

- Which bulbs are you replacing: brake/turn/tail, reverse, or all bulbs in the taillamp?
- When you pull the lamp out, do you see twist-out bulb sockets or a sealed LED unit?
