🔧 Atlas - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Atlas, most rear bulbs are accessed by removing the taillight housing from the body (outer light) and, for some functions, removing the liftgate-mounted inner light. The job is mostly careful trim handling and swapping the bulb in the socket.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; halogen bulbs get hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; use clean gloves.
- ⚠️ Support the lamp as you remove it to avoid scratching paint.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4" drive)
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Torque wrench (inch‑pound)
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear taillight bulb (match the bulb you remove by type/number) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (electrical) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access to the taillight mounting area.
- If you’re unsure which bulb to buy, remove one old bulb first and match its printed number at the parts store.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which rear lamp you’re changing (outer vs inner)
- Use your flashlight and look at the lamp location.
- Outer lamp = mounted on the body (quarter panel) next to the liftgate opening.
- Inner lamp = mounted on the liftgate itself.
Step 2: Remove the outer taillight access cover
- Open the liftgate.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop off the small access cover behind the outer taillight (inside the liftgate opening).
- Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.
Step 3: Remove the outer taillight housing
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the taillight retaining nuts.
- Support the lamp with your free hand as the last nut comes off.
- Pull the taillight straight rearward to release the alignment pins (do not pry against painted surfaces).
- Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling the plug straight off.
Step 4: Remove the bulb carrier (socket plate)
- On the back of the lamp, release the bulb carrier (socket plate).
- Depending on your lamp version, you’ll either:
- Twist the carrier counterclockwise by hand, or unclip it and pull it out.
- If it resists, re-check for a hidden clip.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Remove the old bulb from the correct position (some pull straight out; some twist and pull).
- Install the new bulb fully seated in the socket.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease (electrical) to the connector seal if desired (do not coat the bulb base heavily).
Step 6: Reinstall the outer taillight
- Reinstall the bulb carrier into the lamp (twist/clip it fully locked).
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Align the guide pins and press the lamp straight into place.
- Install the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket and torque wrench (inch‑pound).
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in‑lb)
- Reinstall the access cover by pressing it in by hand.
Step 7: If the “taillight bulb” you need is in the liftgate (inner lamp)
- Use the plastic trim removal tool to open/remove the liftgate inner lamp access area (some versions have a service cover; others require loosening trim).
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to remove the inner lamp retaining nuts/fasteners.
- Pull the inner lamp straight out, unplug the connector, and remove the bulb carrier.
- Swap the bulb, then reinstall the lamp.
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in‑lb)
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition on and test all rear functions: parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
- If a bulb still doesn’t work, remove it and confirm it’s fully seated and the connector is fully clicked in.
- Confirm both lamp housings sit flush and don’t wiggle.
