🔧 Land Cruiser - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Land Cruiser, some rear lights use replaceable bulbs (typically reverse and turn signal), while the main tail/brake light is often an LED unit that is not a “bulb” by itself. The job is mostly removing the rear lamp assembly to access the bulb sockets.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the exhaust cool if you’ve been driving (hot parts nearby).
- ⚠️ Do not touch glass bulbs with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you’re unsure which light is out, have a helper press the brake and operate turn signals while you watch from behind.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Trim panel removal tool (plastic)
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Torque wrench (in-lb or low Nm range)
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Work gloves
- Safety glasses
- Clean shop towel

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1-2
- Rear reverse light bulb - Qty: 1-2
- Rear lamp assembly (LED tail/brake) - Qty: 1-2
- Dielectric grease (bulb socket safe) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the rear hatch for access and lighting.
- Get a quick confirmation of which functions are out: tail (parking lights), brake, turn, reverse.
- Trim tool = plastic pry tool for panels.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which rear light “bulb” you’re replacing
- Turn the headlight switch ON and check if the red tail lights glow.
- Have a helper press the brake pedal and confirm brake lights.
- Turn on the hazard lights and confirm turn signals.
- With the engine running and foot on brake, shift to Reverse and confirm reverse lights.
Step 2: Access the taillamp mounting nuts
- Open the hatch and go to the inside trim next to the taillamp.
- Use a trim panel removal tool (plastic) to pop off the small access cover near the taillamp area.
- If a clip is stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver carefully to start it, then finish with the trim tool.
Step 3: Remove the taillamp assembly
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension to remove the taillamp retaining nuts.
- Support the lamp with your other hand so it doesn’t drop or scrape paint.
- Pull the lamp straight rearward to release the locating pins. Wiggle gently; don’t pry on paint.
Step 4: Replace the replaceable bulbs (turn signal / reverse, if equipped)
- Twist the correct bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the lamp.
- Pull the old bulb straight out (or twist if it’s a twist-lock style).
- Install the new bulb fully seated.
- Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease (bulb socket safe) to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass) using a clean shop towel.
- Reinstall the socket and twist clockwise until it locks.
Step 5: If the tail/brake light is out (often LED), replace the lamp assembly
- If your Land Cruiser’s red tail/brake light is LED, there is no separate “bulb” to swap.
- Disconnect the lamp electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling it apart by hand (do not pull on wires).
- Move any bulb sockets (turn/reverse) from the old lamp into the new lamp by twisting them out and into the new one.
- Install the new lamp assembly in place, lining up the locating pins.
Step 6: Reinstall and torque the taillamp nuts
- Set the lamp into position and press it straight in until it sits flush.
- Thread the nuts on by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench (in-lb or low Nm range) with a 10mm socket to tighten the nuts: Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the access cover using the trim panel removal tool (plastic) if needed to press clips in evenly.
âś… After Repair
- Test tail lights, brake lights, hazards/turn signals, and reverse lights again.
- Make sure the lamp sits evenly and the hatch closes without rubbing.
- If you replaced an LED lamp assembly and it still doesn’t work, recheck the connector seating and inspect the fuse circuit.
