🔧 C-HR - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your C-HR, some rear lighting functions use replaceable bulbs, while others may be LED units that aren’t serviceable as individual “bulbs.” Before I walk you through the exact steps, I need to pinpoint which rear light you’re replacing so you don’t remove the wrong trim or buy the wrong parts.

Quick questions (pick the best match):
1) Which function are you replacing: tail/running light (dim red), brake light (bright red), turn signal (blinking), or reverse (white)?
2) Is it in the outer lamp on the body (quarter panel) or the inner lamp on the hatch (liftgate)?

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; hot glass can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the hatch fully open if working on the liftgate lamp.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear reverse light bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Rear brake/tail bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Taillamp assembly - If your light is LED/non-serviceable - Qty: 1-2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and switch the light stalk to OFF.
  • Open the hatch for access and keep it fully supported.
  • If you’ll be pulling the lamp housing outward: lay a towel on the bumper edge to prevent paint scuffs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing

  • Have a helper press the brake, turn on hazards, and shift to Reverse (engine ON, foot on brake) so you can see which section is out.
  • Use flashlight to identify whether the failed light is in the outer body lamp or the inner hatch lamp.
  • This prevents buying the wrong part.

Step 2: Access the rear lamp service area

  • If the bulb is in the hatch lamp: use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently pop the small access cover on the liftgate trim (if equipped).
  • If the bulb is in the body lamp: open the hatch and locate the access area behind the lamp inside the cargo side trim.
  • Use flashlight so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket (bulb-type lamps only)

  • Reach the socket behind the lamp and rotate it by hand.
  • If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for grip; don’t use pliers (they can crack the socket).
  • Pull the socket straight out once it unlocks.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket (most pull straight out; some twist—match what you see).
  • Install the new bulb using nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the glass.
  • If the bulb has alignment tabs, line them up before pushing in.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and recheck operation

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp, then twist to lock it fully by hand.
  • Test the light function again (tail/brake/turn/reverse) before reinstalling trim panels.
  • Reinstall any access covers by hand; if you removed fasteners, tighten with a Phillips screwdriver snug (do not overtighten).

Step 6: If your “taillight” is LED and not a replaceable bulb

  • If there is no removable socket and the lens/housing is a sealed LED unit, the fix is typically replacing the lamp assembly.
  • With the hatch open, remove the lamp retaining nuts using a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Carefully pull the lamp straight outward to release the locating pins, disconnect the connector, and install the new lamp in reverse order.
  • Stop here and tell me which side (left/right) and which function is out, and I’ll give you the exact lamp removal path for the body lamp vs hatch lamp on your C-HR.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify all rear functions: tail lights, brake lights, hazards/turn signals, and reverse lights.
  • Make sure the bulb socket seal seats fully to keep water out.
  • If a light still doesn’t work, swap the left/right bulb to confirm it’s not a socket/wiring issue.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$200 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$120 (parts only)
