How to Replace Taillight Bulbs on a 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata (Both Sides)
Step-by-step trunk-access instructions, required tools/parts, bulb ID tips, and LED vs bulb troubleshooting

🔧 MX-5 Miata - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your MX-5 Miata, some rear lights use replaceable bulbs (commonly reverse and/or turn), while other functions may be LED modules that don’t have a serviceable “bulb.” The process is mainly trunk access, twisting the bulb socket out, and swapping the bulb without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Let the exhaust cool before working near the rear bumper area.
- 🧤 Wear gloves; bulb glass can get hot and oils can shorten bulb life.
- 🔌 Ignition OFF and lights OFF before removing any bulb sockets.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for bulb replacement.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Plastic trim removal tool set
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear taillight bulbs (match the bulb number printed on your old bulbs) - Qty: 2
- Replacement push clips for trunk trim (optional) - Qty: 2-6
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can pull the trunk side trim back.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which rear lights are “bulbs” vs LED
- Turn the ignition to ON (engine OFF) and switch on the lights.
- Have a helper press the brake and then select Reverse (hold brake) so you can see which light is out.
- Turn ignition OFF again before you start disassembly.
Step 2: Access the back of the taillamp from the trunk
- Use a flashlight to locate the trunk side trim panel behind the taillamp area.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool set to pop out the plastic push clips holding the trunk liner.
- If there are any screws, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Peel the trunk liner back enough to reach the bulb socket(s). Go slow—clips break easily.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Find the socket for the bulb you’re replacing.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out of the lamp housing.
- If it’s tight, use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently assist—do not pry on the painted body.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (or twist and pull if it’s a twist-lock style).
- Read the bulb number printed on the old bulb, and make sure your new bulb matches.
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean before installing.
Step 5: Reinstall socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Turn ignition ON and test the function you replaced (reverse/turn/brake as applicable).
- If it doesn’t work, remove the socket again and re-seat the bulb.
Step 6: Refit the trunk trim
- Reposition the trunk liner.
- Reinstall any screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Push the plastic clips back in by hand (replace any broken ones).
Step 7: If your “taillight bulb” is actually LED (no socket found)
- If you cannot find a twist-out bulb socket and the light function is out, that function may be an LED module.
- At that point, the fix is typically replacing the taillamp assembly or LED module (depending on build). Stop and tell me which light is out (brake/tail/turn/reverse), and I’ll give you the correct repair path.
âś… After Repair
- Verify all rear functions: tail lamps, brake lamps, turn signals, reverse lamps, and hazards.
- Make sure the trunk liner is secured so it won’t rattle.
- If a bulb still doesn’t work, inspect the socket for corrosion or heat damage.
