🔧 CX-9 - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your CX-9, “taillight bulbs” can mean different bulbs (tail/brake, turn signal, or reverse) and they may be located in the outer lamp (on the body) or the inner lamp (on the liftgate). Some rear lamps use LED modules that don’t have replaceable bulbs, so I want to point you to the correct procedure.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key fob from the vehicle.
- 🧊 Let bulbs cool before touching; they can be hot.
- 🧼 Don’t touch a new glass bulb with bare fingers; oils shorten bulb life.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is usually not required for bulb replacement.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 📦 Open the liftgate for better access and lighting.
- 🔦 Have a flashlight ready so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which “taillight bulbs” you’re replacing
- Turn on the lights and check which function is out: tail/running light, brake light, turn signal, or reverse light.
- If possible, have someone press the brake while you look behind the vehicle.
- Different functions can use different bulbs.
Step 2: Access the outer rear lamp (body-side lamp)
- Open the liftgate and locate the rear lamp mounting area at the side of the opening.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop off any small access covers near the lamp fasteners (if equipped).
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4" drive) to remove the lamp retaining nuts/bolts.
Step 3: Remove the lamp assembly without breaking the alignment pins
- With the fasteners removed, pull the lamp straight rearward (not outward) using both hands.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to apply gentle, even pressure at the edge.
- Don’t pry hard—plastic locator pins can snap.
Step 4: Remove and replace the bulb(s) in the lamp
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and remove it from the lamp housing.
- Remove the bulb from the socket:
- If it’s a wedge bulb, pull it straight out (use nitrile gloves).
- If it’s a bayonet bulb, push in slightly and rotate to release.
- Install the new bulb into the socket using nitrile gloves.
- Reinstall the socket by inserting it and twisting clockwise until it locks.
Step 5: Reinstall the lamp assembly
- Line up the lamp’s locator pins with the body holes.
- Press the lamp straight into place until fully seated.
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4" drive) to reinstall the retaining nuts/bolts.
- Torque to 7-9 Nm (62-80 in-lbs)
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–5 for the opposite taillight so both sides match in brightness and color.
Step 7: If your CX-9 uses LED rear lamps (no bulb socket found)
- If you remove the lamp and do not see twist-out bulb sockets, the rear lamp function may be an LED module.
- In that case the fix is replacing the lamp assembly (or LED module if serviceable), not a bulb.
- Tell me which light is out (brake/tail/turn/reverse) and whether it’s on the body-side or liftgate-side, and I’ll give the exact correct replacement path.
✅ After Repair
- 🔦 Test running lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
- 💧 Check that the lamp sits flush and the gasket isn’t pinched (helps prevent water leaks).
- 🔩 Recheck fasteners after a short drive if anything felt loose.
