🔧 Odyssey - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Odyssey, the “taillight area” can include several different bulbs (turn signal, reverse light, and sometimes an inner liftgate lamp). Some rear lighting on the Elite trim is LED and may not use a replaceable bulb.

We’ll remove the bulb socket(s), match the bulb number printed on the old bulb, and replace both sides.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the van.
  • 🔥 If you recently drove, let the lamp area cool before touching bulbs.
  • 🪟 Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small flat-head screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Replacement rear bulb(s) matching the bulb number on your old bulb - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • đź’ˇ Decide which rear function you’re replacing: turn signal, reverse, or inner liftgate lamp.
  • 🔍 Tip: have someone press the brake/turn signal so you can confirm which lamp is out.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing

  • Use a flashlight and walk around the rear of the van.
  • Have a helper operate one function at a time (turn signal, hazards, reverse, brake) to see which section is out.
  • Many Elite rear lamps are LED. If the out section has no bulb socket behind it, the lamp assembly may be the fix.

Step 2: Access the bulb socket (outer rear lamp area)

  • Open the tailgate.
  • Look in the rear cargo area side trim near the taillight for a small access cover.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry the cover open.
  • If the cover is tight, use a small flat-head screwdriver carefully at the notch (go slow to avoid marring).

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Reach in and locate the socket that lines up with the failed light section.
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
  • If you can’t turn it by hand, use nitrile gloves for extra grip.

Step 4: Replace the bulb (match the old bulb number)

  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (some types twist out; if it resists, try a gentle twist).
  • Read the bulb number printed on the old bulb base (example formats: 7440, 7443, 921).
  • Install the new bulb of the exact same number into the socket.
  • Wear nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the glass.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing and turn clockwise until it locks.
  • Test the light function (turn signal, reverse, etc.).
  • Reinstall the access cover by pressing it back into place.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2-5 on the opposite rear lamp so both sides match in brightness and color.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔎 Verify left and right sides work: tail/running lights, brake lights, hazards/turn signals, reverse lights.
  • 🧼 If one bulb still doesn’t work, remove the socket and check for corrosion or a loose fit.
  • 📦 Keep the old bulb until you confirm the new one works.
