🔧 Malibu - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Malibu, some rear lamps use replaceable twist-in bulbs, but certain trims/functions can be LED modules that don’t have a “bulb” you can swap. Before I give you the exact steps and the correct parts list, we need to confirm which rear light function you’re replacing.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and remove the key/fob from the cabin.
  • ⚠️ Let the exhaust area cool if you just drove.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch glass bulb with bare fingers (skin oil shortens bulb life).
  • ⚠️ If you’ll remove lamp housings, support them so you don’t scratch paint.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear bulb(s) - Qty: 2
  • Replacement trim clips (optional) - Qty: 2-6

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove loose cargo so you can access the trunk side liners.
  • If you’re unsure which bulb is out, have a helper press the brake or turn signal while you watch the rear lamps.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which “taillight” function you mean

  • With the car in Park, use a helper to check which one is out: running/parking light, brake light, turn signal, reverse light, or outer vs inner (trunk lid) lamp.
  • Use a flashlight to look through the lens for “LED” markings or a visible replaceable bulb.

Step 2: Choose the correct path (bulb vs LED module)

  • If you see a removable socket that twists out from the back of the lamp, you likely have a replaceable bulb (continue to Step 3).
  • If there is no twist-out socket and it’s an LED board/module, the fix is typically replacing the lamp assembly (tell me and I’ll map that procedure).

Step 3: Access the rear of the lamp from the trunk

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently pull back the trunk side liner near the taillamp area.
  • If there’s a small access cover, pop it open with a small flat-blade screwdriver.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket

  • Grip the socket and rotate it (usually about 1/4 turn) to unlock, then pull it straight out by hand.
  • Don’t yank wires—hold the socket body.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves.
  • Remove the old bulb from the socket (pull straight out or twist depending on style).
  • Install the new bulb fully seated in the socket.

Step 6: Reinstall and test

  • Reinsert the socket into the lamp and twist to lock it.
  • Test the function (parking/brake/turn/reverse) before reinstalling the trunk liner.
  • Reposition the liner and press any clips back in by hand.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify both left and right sides work for the function you replaced.
  • If a new bulb still doesn’t light, the next checks are the fuse and the socket for heat damage/corrosion.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$200 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$60 (parts only)

You Save: $70-$140 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.

🎯 Ready to get started?

Answer these 2 quick questions and I’ll tailor the exact bulb type(s) and the exact steps for your Malibu (including which side/which access point):

  • Which function are you replacing: brake/turn, parking (dim tail), or reverse?
  • Do you see a twist-out bulb socket behind the lamp in the trunk, or does it look like a sealed LED unit with no removable socket?
