How to Replace Taillight Bulbs on a 2018 Audi Q5 (Outer & Inner Tailgate Lamps)
Step-by-step access, bulb vs LED assembly identification, tools/parts list, and 4 Nm torque specs

🔧 Q5 - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Q5, the “taillight” can mean different lamp functions (brake/turn/tail/reverse), and some versions use LED modules that don’t have replaceable bulbs. I’ll show you how to access both the outer (quarter panel) and inner (tailgate) lamps, then replace either the bulb holder (if equipped) or the entire lamp if it’s LED-only.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Let the lamp area cool before touching (bulbs can get hot).
- ⚠️ Don’t touch a new glass bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you’ll unplug lamp connectors, disconnect the battery negative terminal to reduce the chance of a warning light or short.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the rear hatch and keep it fully supported.
- Answer these so I can point you to the exact lamp and parts (pick one per question):
- 🔎 Which function is out: tail/running light, brake light, turn signal, or reverse light?
- 🔎 Is the dead light on the outer body lamp (quarter panel) or the inner hatch lamp (tailgate)?
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which lamp section is out
- Use a helper, or back up near a wall, and turn on lights/brakes/turn signals to see which segment is dead.
- Use a flashlight to look closely: many Prestige lamps are LED modules (no removable bulb).
- If it’s LED-only, you replace the lamp assembly.
Step 2: Access the outer (quarter panel) taillight mounting area
- In the cargo area, locate the rear side trim access cover behind the taillight.
- Use a trim removal tool set to pop off the access cover.
- Use a flashlight to identify the lamp retaining fasteners and the electrical connector.
Step 3: Remove the outer taillight assembly
- Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" extension (1/4" drive) to remove the retaining nuts.
- Support the lamp with your other hand so it doesn’t fall or scratch paint.
- Gently pull the lamp straight rearward (do not pry hard on painted edges).
- Unplug the connector by pressing the lock tab, then pulling the connector straight off. Use nitrile gloves for grip.
Step 4: Replace bulbs (if your outer lamp uses a bulb holder)
- On the back of the lamp, remove the bulb carrier/holder (it typically twists out).
- Twist the failed bulb out of the socket and install the new bulb using nitrile gloves.
- Definition: A “bulb holder/carrier” is the plastic plate that holds multiple bulbs and twists/locks into the lamp.
- If the contacts look burned or melted, replace the rear lamp bulb holder/socket.
Step 5: If LED-only: replace the outer lamp assembly
- If there is no removable bulb holder and the lamp is sealed, install the new outer rear lamp assembly.
- Plug the connector in until it clicks.
Step 6: Reinstall and torque the outer lamp fasteners
- Position the lamp locating pins into the body grommets, then push the lamp into place evenly.
- Install the nuts by hand first (prevents cross-threading), then tighten using a 10mm socket.
- Final tighten using a torque wrench (in-lb or low-range Nm): Torque to 4 Nm (3 ft-lbs).
- Reinstall the access cover using a trim removal tool set.
Step 7: Access the inner (tailgate) lamp (if the dead section is on the hatch)
- Open the hatch and locate the inner lamp area on the tailgate.
- Use a trim removal tool set to remove the small trim cover(s) near the lamp, or the inner hatch trim panel if required.
- Remove fasteners using a Torx T20 screwdriver or Torx T25 screwdriver (as equipped).
- Remove retaining nuts/bolts using a 10mm socket if present.
- Unplug the connector, then remove the lamp.
Step 8: Replace bulb(s) or the inner lamp assembly
- If your inner lamp has a removable bulb holder, twist it out and replace the failed bulb using nitrile gloves.
- If it’s sealed LED, install the new inner tailgate lamp assembly.
Step 9: Reinstall inner lamp and trim
- Reinstall the lamp and start all fasteners by hand.
- Tighten with a torque wrench (in-lb or low-range Nm): Torque to 4 Nm (3 ft-lbs) (lamp nuts/bolts).
- Reinstall trim with a trim removal tool set and tighten any screws with a Torx T20 screwdriver or Torx T25 screwdriver.
âś… After Repair
- Test all rear functions: running lights, brake lights, turn signals, hazards, and reverse lights.
- Confirm the lamp sits flush and the hatch closes without rubbing.
- If you disconnected the battery, reconnect it and verify no warning messages remain.
- Tip: Replace left/right bulbs in pairs for matching brightness/color.
