🔧 Highlander - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Highlander Limited, the outer rear lamp has some functions that are LED (not a replaceable “bulb”), while the turn signal and reverse light are typically replaceable bulbs accessed from inside the cargo area.
Before I lay out the exact steps, I need one quick detail so you don’t buy the wrong parts: are you replacing the brake/running light (red), the turn signal (amber), or the reverse light (white)?
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ If you must test lights, keep fingers clear of moving liftgate latches.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4")
- Trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty)
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2
- Rear reverse light bulb - Qty: 2
- Rear outer tail lamp assembly (LED type, if brake/running LED is failed) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Open the liftgate and remove cargo so you can reach the side access panels.
- If you’re doing both sides, do one side at a time so you can use the other as a reference.
- Tip: Take a quick photo before unplugging anything.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which light is out
- Turn on the parking lights and check both rear sides.
- Have a helper press the brake pedal to confirm brake lights.
- Use the turn signal stalk to confirm left/right turn signals.
- Shift to reverse only with the brake held (helper watching) to confirm reverse lamps.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.
Step 2: Access the rear lamp bulb sockets (turn/reverse bulbs)
- On the side you’re working on, locate the small access door in the cargo-area trim behind the tail lamp.
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to pop the access door open.
- If clips are tight, carefully assist with a small flathead screwdriver (don’t gouge the plastic).
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Use a flashlight to identify the correct bulb socket (turn signal or reverse).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
- Wear nitrile gloves to keep oil off the new bulb.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wiggle gently if stuck).
- Push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
- If the new bulb is LED-type, it may be polarity-sensitive: if it doesn’t light, remove it, rotate 180°, and reinstall.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the lamp housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Test the light function again (turn/reverse) before closing the access door.
- Snap the access door back into the cargo trim.
Step 6: If the brake/running light is failed (LED type) — replace the outer lamp assembly
- If the failed function is the red brake/running light and your lamp is LED, there is no replaceable bulb; the outer lamp assembly is replaced as a unit.
- Open the cargo trim access and unplug the lamp connector by hand (press the tab and pull).
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4") to remove the lamp retaining nuts.
- Carefully pull the lamp straight rearward (it’s held by alignment pins).
- Install the new lamp, align the pins, and press it into place evenly.
- Reinstall nuts and Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the electrical connector and test all functions before closing trim.
✅ After Repair
- Confirm left and right turn signals flash at normal speed (fast-flash usually means a bulb issue).
- Verify brake lights and running lights are equal brightness side-to-side.
- Make sure the access doors are fully clipped so they don’t rattle.
