🔧 Corolla - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You can replace the rear bulbs from inside the trunk without removing the entire taillight housing on your Corolla. The key is accessing the back of the taillight, twisting the correct bulb socket out, and swapping the bulb without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ If bulbs were on recently, let them cool 5-10 minutes.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch halogen/incandescent bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Support the trunk lid so it can’t drop on you.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Stop/Tail bulb (dual-filament, typically 7443) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Rear turn signal bulb (typically 7440A amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Reverse light bulb (typically 921) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and clear out cargo so you can reach both rear corners.
  • Have a flashlight ready so you can identify the correct bulb socket.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which “taillight bulb” you’re replacing

  • Use a flashlight and look at the rear lamp functions to match the bulb.
  • If you can, have someone help you check: parking lights (tail), brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights.
  • Most people mean the red brake/tail bulb.

Step 2: Open the trunk and access the taillight area

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the trunk-side trim panel behind each taillight.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool (specialty) to gently pop open the access cover or loosen the trunk liner at the corner. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove panels without breaking clips.)
  • If a clip is stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver carefully to lift the clip center, then pull the clip out.

Step 3: Remove the correct bulb socket (left side)

  • Use a flashlight to identify the socket you need (stop/tail vs turn vs reverse).
  • Grip the socket firmly and twist it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand, then pull it straight out.
  • Don’t pull on the wires.

Step 4: Replace the bulb (left side)

  • With nitrile gloves on, remove the old bulb:
    • Most push-in bulbs: pull straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean dry cloth before installing.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket (left side)

  • Insert the socket back into the taillight housing.
  • Twist clockwise by hand until it locks in place.

Step 6: Repeat the same steps on the right side

  • Use the plastic trim removal tool (specialty) and flashlight to open the right-side access.
  • Remove the matching socket, swap the bulb, and twist the socket back in by hand.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.

Step 7: Refit trunk trim and clips

  • Reposition the trunk liner and access covers.
  • Press the clips back in by hand; use a small flathead screwdriver only if you need to help align the clip center.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn on parking lights and confirm both tail lights illuminate evenly.
  • Press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights are bright.
  • Test left/right turn signals and reverse lights.
  • If a bulb doesn’t work, remove that socket again and re-seat the bulb fully.
