🔧 Rogue - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll be removing each rear taillight assembly from the body and swapping the burnt bulbs with new ones. This keeps your Rogue safe and legal, and avoids getting rear‑ended or ticketed at night.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🚨 Always park on a flat surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake before working.
  • 🔌 Turn the ignition off and make sure all lights are switched off so the bulbs are cool before touching them.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves when handling glass bulbs to avoid burns and skin oils getting on the glass.
  • 🔦 Do not pry hard on the taillight housing; it is held by plastic clips that can break if forced.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧰 Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 🧰 10mm socket
  • 🧰 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🧰 1/4" drive extension 3"
  • 🧰 Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
  • 🧰 Small flathead screwdriver 3-4mm tip
  • 🧰 Work light or flashlight
  • 🧰 Nitrile or mechanic gloves
  • 🧰 Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • đź’ˇ Tail/stop light bulbs (7443 dual‑filament) - Qty: 2 (replace both sides)
  • đź’ˇ Rear turn signal bulbs (7440 or 7440A amber) - Qty: 2 (optional but recommended pair)
  • đź’ˇ Rear backup light bulbs (921) - Qty: 2 (optional but recommended pair)
  • 🧴 Dielectric grease for bulb sockets - Qty: 1 small tube
  • 🧻 Clean lint‑free cloth - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park the Rogue on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and make sure the light switch is OFF.
  • Open the rear liftgate fully so you can reach the taillight screws on each side.
  • Unload big items from the cargo area so you can stand close and work comfortably.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillight mounting screws

  • Stand behind your Rogue and open the liftgate fully.
  • Look at the side of the taillight assembly that faces the liftgate opening; you’ll see two small black plastic covers or exposed screws running vertically.
  • If plastic caps are present, use the small flathead screwdriver to gently pop off each cap. Twist the screwdriver, do not pry hard.

Step 2: Remove taillight mounting bolts

  • Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket with ratchet to remove the two screws/bolts holding the taillight to the body.
  • Keep one hand on the taillight so it doesn’t drop when the last bolt comes out.
  • Set the screws/bolts aside in a safe place so they don’t roll away.
  • Reinstall torque later to: 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)

Step 3: Release the taillight from the body clips

  • The outer edge of the taillight (toward the side of the car) is still held by plastic guide pins in rubber grommets.
  • Place one hand on the outer edge and one on the inner edge of the taillight.
  • Pull the taillight straight rearward (toward you), not sideways. Use a firm, wiggling motion.
  • If it feels stuck, slide a plastic trim removal tool gently between the taillight and body at the inner edge and twist slightly to help pop the pins free. Do not use metal tools on paint.
  • Once loose, support the taillight so the wiring harness is not pulled tight.

Step 4: Identify the correct bulb sockets

  • On the back of the taillight assembly you’ll see several round bulb sockets with wires attached.
  • Typically:
    • Upper/larger socket: tail/stop light bulb (7443 dual‑filament).
    • Middle socket: turn signal bulb (7440 amber).
    • Lower or inner socket: backup/reverse bulb (921).
  • If you’re unsure, you can flip the light switch on briefly (with a helper watching) before removing bulbs to see which section is out, then switch OFF again.

Step 5: Remove the old taillight bulbs

  • Grasp the correct bulb socket (usually the upper one for the tail/stop) firmly.
  • Turn the socket about 1/4 turn counterclockwise and pull it straight out of the housing.
  • With the socket out, gently push the bulb in slightly and pull straight out, or just pull straight out depending on the design.
  • If the bulb is stuck, wiggle it gently, but do not crush it.

Step 6: Install the new bulbs

  • Before installing, wipe the new bulbs with a clean lint‑free cloth to remove any fingerprints.
  • Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease to the metal contacts on the bulb. This helps prevent corrosion.
  • Insert the new 7443 tail/stop bulb into the socket, making sure it is fully seated and straight.
  • Line up the tabs on the socket with the openings in the taillight housing.
  • Push the socket into the housing and turn it 1/4 turn clockwise until it stops.
  • Repeat this process for the other bulbs (turn signal 7440 and backup 921) if you’re replacing them now.

Step 7: Test the bulbs before reassembly

  • Let the taillight hang carefully or support it with one hand (do not strain the wiring).
  • Close the liftgate latch gently with a screwdriver if needed, or just hold it almost closed while testing lights.
  • Turn the ignition to ON (engine not required) and:
    • Turn on the parking/headlights to check the tail light function.
    • Press the brake pedal (use a helper or a stick) to check the brake function.
    • Use the turn signal and shift to Reverse (foot on brake, engine running if needed) to test the other bulbs if replaced.
  • Turn ignition OFF again when done testing.

Step 8: Reinstall the taillight assembly

  • Align the plastic guide pins on the back of the taillight with the rubber grommets in the body.
  • Slide the taillight straight forward into place until it sits flush with the body panels.
  • Install the two mounting screws/bolts using the 10mm socket with ratchet or Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Tighten them evenly until snug, then lightly torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs). Just snug, do not over‑tighten.
  • If your Rogue had plastic caps over the screws, press them back into place by hand.

Step 9: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–8 on the other taillight so both sides have fresh bulbs.
  • Always replace tail/stop bulbs in pairs so brightness and color match.

âś… After Repair

  • Walk behind your Rogue with the lights on and verify:
    • Tail lights are on with the headlight switch.
    • Brake lights get noticeably brighter when the pedal is pressed.
    • Left and right turn signals flash at normal speed.
    • Reverse lights turn on when in Reverse (if replaced).
  • Check that both taillight assemblies sit evenly and flush with the body, with no gaps.
  • Take a short drive at night and have someone follow you to confirm visibility is good.
