🔧 Sierra 1500 - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Sierra 1500, the taillight bulbs are inside the rear lamp housings. You’ll open the tailgate, remove the lamp, swap the bulbs, then reinstall the lamp so everything seals and works correctly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch glass bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Pull the lamp straight back—don’t pry hard or you can break the alignment pins.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T15 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear stop/turn/tail bulb - Qty: 2
  • Rear reverse bulb - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the tailgate to access the taillamp screws.
  • Decide which bulbs you’re replacing: stop/turn/tail (red light) and/or reverse (white light).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb(s) are out

  • Have a helper press the brake and turn signals while you watch the rear lights.
  • Use a flashlight to identify which section of the lamp is not lighting.
  • Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.

Step 2: Remove the taillamp assembly (one side at a time)

  • Open the tailgate.
  • Use a Torx T15 screwdriver to remove the two taillamp screws on the inboard edge of the lamp (the side closest to the tailgate opening).
  • Grab the lamp and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
  • If it feels stuck, gently work around the edge with a plastic trim removal tool (a plastic pry tool that helps separate panels without scratching paint).

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket(s)

  • Support the lamp with one hand.
  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out of the housing.
  • Repeat for any other socket you’re replacing (stop/turn/tail and/or reverse).

Step 4: Replace the bulb(s)

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If your replacement bulb is glass, avoid touching the glass; use the nitrile gloves.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket(s)

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
  • Twist clockwise by hand until it locks.

Step 6: Reinstall the taillamp assembly

  • Line up the lamp’s alignment pins with the truck body holes.
  • Push the lamp straight forward until it seats flush.
  • Install the two screws using the Torx T15 screwdriver.
  • Snug the screws (do not overtighten—plastic can crack). Torque to 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs)

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2-6 for the other taillight.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the lights on and confirm: running lights, brake lights, turn signals, hazards, and reverse lights.
  • If a bulb still doesn’t work, remove the socket and re-seat the bulb firmly.
  • If the new bulb is flickering or dead, the socket may be heat-damaged and may need replacement.
