Step-by-step removal of the taillamp housing, bulb types, tools/parts list, and LED assembly tips for 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2021
🔧 Grand Cherokee - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each outer taillight housing from the body, then swap the bulb(s) in the socket(s) behind it. This is usually quick, but some Grand Cherokee trims use LED taillamps where “bulbs” aren’t serviceable and the lamp assembly is replaced instead.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new glass bulbs with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Pull the lamp straight back; prying can crack the lens or chip paint.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Open the liftgate for access to the taillight fasteners on both sides.
- Lay a shop towel on the bumper corner below the lamp to protect paint if the lamp slips.
- If you’re reusing bulbs temporarily, note which socket came from which position.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Verify whether you have serviceable bulbs or LED taillamps
- Open the liftgate and look at the back side of the taillight area.
- If you see removable twist-lock bulb sockets with wiring pigtails, you have serviceable bulbs.
- If the lamp has a sealed LED module (no removable bulb sockets), replace the entire lamp assembly (skip to Step 8).
- If unsure, proceed—Step 6 will confirm.
Step 2: Remove the taillight fasteners (one side)
- Use a Torx T25 driver to remove the two taillight screws on the inboard edge (visible with the liftgate open).
- If your screws are Phillips-head instead, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Place the screws in a safe spot so they don’t fall into the body gap.
Step 3: Release the taillight housing from the locating pins
- Hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
- If it’s stuck, use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently help it start moving at the body seam.
- Pull straight back—don’t twist.
Step 4: Disconnect the wiring (if needed)
- If the harness connector is tight, press the lock tab and disconnect by hand.
- If you can’t press the tab, use needle-nose pliers carefully on the tab only (do not pull on wires).
Step 5: Remove the bulb socket(s)
- Turn each bulb socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull it out of the lamp.
- A “twist-lock socket” is a socket that locks into the housing with a short twist.
- Set the lamp on a shop towel to prevent scratches.
Step 6: Replace the bulb(s)
- For push-in bulbs: pull the old bulb straight out of the socket and push the new bulb straight in.
- For twist-base bulbs: rotate the bulb base to unlock it from the socket, then install the new one and lock it.
- Wear nitrile gloves so you don’t contaminate the glass (if it’s a glass bulb).
Step 7: Reinstall sockets and refit the taillight
- Reinstall each socket into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
- Reconnect the wiring connector until it clicks.
- Line up the locating pins and press the lamp straight into place by hand.
- Reinstall the two taillight screws using a Torx T25 driver or Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Torque to 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs)
Step 8: If equipped with LED taillamps (no bulbs), replace the lamp assembly
- Remove the lamp fasteners using a Torx T25 driver or 8mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension (1/4") (fastener type varies by lamp).
- Pull the lamp straight rearward and disconnect the harness.
- Install the new lamp, connect the harness, and seat the locating pins.
- Reinstall fasteners and tighten snugly.
Step 9: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2 through 7 (or Step 8) on the other taillight.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition on and test: parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
- If a bulb doesn’t work, remove that socket and confirm the bulb is fully seated and the socket is locked.
- Confirm both lamps sit flush and evenly against the body.
