🔧 MDX - Taillight Bulb Replacement (Left & Right)

On your MDX, some rear lights use replaceable bulbs, while other rear lights are LED modules (not serviceable as a “bulb”). The exact steps and parts depend on which rear light function you’re replacing.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Let the exhaust cool before reaching behind the bumper area.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch glass bulb with bare fingers; skin oils shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Correct rear bulb(s) for the failed light function - Qty: 2
  • Tail lamp assembly (if your failed light is an LED module) - Qty: 1-2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the tailgate and clear cargo so you can access the side trim.
  • Answer these 2 quick questions so I give the exact bulb/steps:
  • 📝 Which light are you replacing: tail/running light, brake light, turn signal, or reverse light?
  • 📝 Is the light located on the body (outer corner) or on the tailgate (inner piece)?

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which rear lamp is out

  • Have a helper operate the lights: parking lights ON, brakes applied, turn signal ON, and reverse (foot on brake).
  • Use a flashlight to confirm exactly which section is not lighting.
  • Tip: A phone video helps when working alone.

Step 2: Access the rear lamp service door (most bulb-type sockets)

  • In the cargo area, locate the small access cover behind the rear lamp (left or right side panel).
  • Pry the cover open using a plastic trim removal tool or small flathead screwdriver.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket (bulb-serviceable style)

  • Reach in and twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
  • If space is tight, use nitrile gloves for better grip.
  • Pull the socket straight out.

Step 4: Replace the bulb (bulb-serviceable style)

  • Remove the bulb from the socket by pulling it straight out.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Do not touch the glass portion with bare hands; use nitrile gloves.

Step 5: Reinstall socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Turn the ignition ON and retest that function.
  • Reinstall the access cover by pressing it back into place.

Step 6: If your failed “taillight” is an LED module (not a replaceable bulb)

  • If there is no removable bulb socket for the failed section, it’s likely an LED module and the lamp assembly is replaced as a unit.
  • From inside the cargo area, remove the access cover using a plastic trim removal tool.
  • Disconnect the lamp electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling it off by hand.
  • Remove the lamp mounting nuts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
  • Carefully pull the lamp straight out (there are alignment pins). Don’t pry against painted surfaces.
  • Install the replacement lamp, align pins, and press it into place evenly.
  • Reinstall nuts and Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the connector, test all rear light functions, then reinstall the trim/access cover.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify all rear lights work: tail/running, brake, turn, reverse, and hazard flashers.
  • If a new bulb still doesn’t work on one side, swap the left/right bulb (same type) to confirm it’s not a socket/wiring issue.
  • Confirm no warning messages remain on the dash.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$220 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$60 (parts only, if bulb-type)

You Save: $70-$160 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
