How to Replace Taillight Bulbs on a 2014-2019 GMC Sierra 1500 (Left & Right)
Step-by-step taillight housing removal, bulb swap, required tools/parts, and safety tips for 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019
🔧 Sierra 1500 - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each taillight housing, twist out the bulb socket(s), and swap the bulb(s). This is straightforward, but the housing has alignment pins—pull it straight back so you don’t crack the lens.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn lights off and let bulbs cool before touching them.
- ⚠️ Support the housing with one hand so it doesn’t drop and scratch paint.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch glass bulbs with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Torx T15 screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- Trim removal tool (plastic pry tool)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Taillight bulb(s) (match the bulb number from your old bulb) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the tailgate to access the taillight fasteners.
- Tip: Take a quick photo of the sockets first.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the taillight fasteners
- Open the tailgate.
- Locate the two fasteners on the inboard edge of the taillight (visible with tailgate open).
- Remove the fasteners using a Torx T15 screwdriver (common) or a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet (some trucks vary).
- Torque: GM may not publish a service torque for these small lamp screws; reinstall snug only—do not overtighten.
Step 2: Pull the taillight housing out
- Hold the housing with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
- If it feels stuck, use a trim removal tool (plastic pry tool) to gently help start it—do not pry on the lens edge.
- You’ll feel the alignment pins pop free from the body grommets.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket(s)
- From the back of the housing, identify the socket for the bulb you’re replacing (brake/turn/tail and reverse are different sockets).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand until it unlocks, then pull it out.
- Tip: Use a flashlight to see the socket tabs.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves (helps avoid touching the glass).
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Match the new bulb to the old bulb’s number (printed on the bulb base), then push the new bulb fully into the socket.
- If you have it, apply a very light smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 5: Reinstall socket(s) and taillight housing
- Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock.
- Line up the housing’s alignment pins with the body grommets, then push the housing straight forward until fully seated.
- Reinstall the two fasteners using a Torx T15 screwdriver or 10mm socket and tighten snug.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other taillight.
âś… After Repair
- Turn on parking lights and confirm both sides illuminate evenly.
- Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) and confirm both brake lights work.
- Test turn signals and hazards.
- If you replaced reverse bulbs, shift to Reverse (foot on brake) and confirm both reverse lights work.
