🔧 CX-5 - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll access the rear lamp housings, remove the bulb sockets, and swap the bulbs without removing the bumper. On your CX-5, there are bulbs in the outer body lamp and (depending on function) the inner liftgate lamp.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; hot bulbs can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the lamp as you pull it out so you don’t crack the lens.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep lights switched off.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty)
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or low-range Nm) (specialty)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear brake/tail light bulb (outer lamp) - Qty: 2
  • Rear turn signal bulb (outer lamp) - Qty: 2
  • Rear reverse light bulb (liftgate lamp, if equipped with bulb) - Qty: 2
  • Replacement trim clips (rear side trim access covers) - Qty: 2-6

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear liftgate for access and better lighting.
  • If you’re unsure which bulb is out, have a helper press the brake pedal and operate the turn signals while you watch.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which rear lamp section you’re servicing

  • The outer lamp is on the body (rear quarter panel) and usually contains brake/tail and turn bulbs.
  • The inner lamp is on the liftgate and often contains the reverse light (varies by configuration).
  • Match the bulb to the function, not just size.

Step 2: Access the outer taillight fasteners (body-mounted lamp)

  • Open the liftgate.
  • Inside the cargo area near the lamp, remove the small access cover using a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) (a plastic pry tool that lifts panels without scratching).
  • Remove the taillight retaining nuts using a 10mm socket, 3" extension (1/4" drive), and 1/4" drive ratchet.

Step 3: Remove the outer taillight assembly

  • With one hand supporting the lamp, pull the taillight straight rearward to release the locating pins.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently—do not pry on the painted body with a screwdriver.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket(s)

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the lamp housing.
  • If a socket is tight, use nitrile gloves for better grip.

Step 5: Replace the bulb(s)

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Do not touch the bulb glass with bare fingers; use nitrile gloves.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket(s) and test

  • Insert the socket into the housing and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Before reinstalling the lamp, test the function (tail lights, brakes, turn signals, hazards).

Step 7: Reinstall the outer taillight assembly

  • Align the locating pins and press the lamp straight into place.
  • Install the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (in-lb or low-range Nm) (specialty).
  • Reinstall the access cover by pressing it back in place.

Step 8: Inner liftgate lamp bulbs (if your failed bulb is on the liftgate)

  • Remove the liftgate inner trim access cover (or trim panel section) using a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty).
  • Remove any retaining screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver if present.
  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand, replace the bulb, then twist clockwise to lock.

✅ After Repair

  • Confirm left and right tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals work correctly.
  • Verify the lamp sits flush to the body and liftgate (no gaps).
  • If a new bulb doesn’t light, remove the socket and re-seat the bulb, then re-test.
