🔧 Grand Cherokee - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Grand Cherokee, the taillight bulbs are serviced by removing each outer taillamp housing, then twisting the bulb socket(s) out from the back. The exact bulb type can vary by function (brake/park, turn, reverse), so you’ll match the number printed on the old bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the exhaust and rear bumper area cool before reaching behind the lamps.
- ⚠️ Turn the lights off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch a new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If a bulb socket looks melted or burnt, stop and replace the socket too.

- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Trim removal tool (plastic)
- Ratchet
- 10mm socket
- 3" socket extension
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Torx T20 screwdriver
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Taillight bulb (match the number on your old bulb) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access to the inner edge of each taillamp.
- Lay a towel on the bumper corner to protect paint if the lamp slips.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which “taillight” bulb you’re replacing
- Turn on the lights (park lights), then press the brake, then try the turn signals and reverse lights (helper recommended).
- Note what’s out: park/brake, turn, reverse, or multiple functions.
- Match the bulb number to avoid mistakes.
Step 2: Remove the taillamp retaining fasteners
- Open the liftgate and locate the two fasteners on the inner edge of the taillamp.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or Torx T20 screwdriver (whichever matches the fastener head) to remove them.
- If your lamp uses nuts instead, use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 3" extension to remove them.
- Torque to: not specified by Jeep (reinstall snug; do not overtighten).
Step 3: Pull the taillamp housing straight back
- Grip the lamp and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- If it’s stuck, use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently start it—do not pry on painted surfaces.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket(s)
- From behind the lamp, find the socket for the bulb you need.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- If access is tight, use a flashlight so you can see the socket tabs clearly.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some types are a push-and-pull fit).
- Install the new bulb by pushing it fully into the socket.
- If you have it, apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and taillamp
- Insert the socket into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Align the lamp pins, then push the housing straight in until fully seated.
- Reinstall the two fasteners using the Phillips #2 screwdriver or Torx T20 screwdriver (or 10mm socket if equipped).
- Torque to: not specified by Jeep (snug only).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same process for the other taillamp so both sides match in brightness and color.
âś… After Repair
- Test park lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
- Make sure each lamp housing is seated evenly and not loose.
- If a new bulb still doesn’t work, inspect the socket for corrosion and check the fuse next.
