🔧 Escape - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove each rear taillight housing, swap the bulb(s), then reinstall the housing. This is a common DIY job because the bulbs sit behind the taillight assembly, not inside the liftgate trim.

Assumption: Your Escape has standard (non-LED) rear bulbs; steps cover left and right sides.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass part of any bulb; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the taillight when it comes loose so it doesn’t scratch paint.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail/stop light bulb (3157 type) - Qty: 2
  • Rear reverse light bulb (921 type) - Qty: 2 (if replacing reverse bulbs too)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate for access to the taillight fasteners.
  • Put on nitrile gloves (helps keep oils off bulbs).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the taillight fasteners (one side)

  • Open the liftgate and locate the two taillight retaining screws on the inside edge of the taillight.
  • Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" extension to remove both screws.
  • Set the screws aside where they won’t roll away.

Step 2: Pull the taillight housing off the body

  • Grip the taillight housing with both hands and pull it straight rearward (toward you).
  • If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it pop free.
  • Pull straight back to avoid breaking clips.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket(s)

  • Behind the housing you’ll see one or more bulb sockets (a “socket” is the twist-in plastic holder the bulb sits in).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out of the taillight.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Using a clean shop towel (or gloves), push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If you accidentally touch the bulb, wipe it with the clean shop towel before installing.

Step 5: Reinstall socket(s) and taillight housing

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Line up the housing pins/clips with the body and push the taillight straight forward until fully seated.
  • Install the two screws using the 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lbs)

Step 6: Repeat for the other side

  • Do the same procedure on the other taillight so both sides match in brightness and color.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition on and test: parking lights, brake lights, and reverse lights.
  • Confirm both sides match in brightness.
  • If a bulb doesn’t light, remove the socket and re-seat the bulb fully, then re-test.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,500-₹4,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹400-₹1,800 (parts only)

You Save: ₹1,100-₹2,200 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹1,000-₹2,500/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
