🔧 Tacoma - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove each taillight housing, twist out the bulb sockets, swap the bulbs, then reinstall the housings. This is straightforward, but the housings have alignment pins that can break if you pull the wrong direction.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Quick check: Which bulbs are you replacing—brake/tail, turn signal, reverse, or all bulbs in both taillights?

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights off and let bulbs cool before touching them.
  • ⚠️ Keep the key out of the ignition while working near wiring.
  • ⚠️ Don’t yank the housing sideways—pull it straight back to avoid breaking the plastic locating pins.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Taillight bulbs (match type to your socket) - Qty: 2-6
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and switch all exterior lights OFF.
  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the taillight fasteners.
  • Tip: Take a photo before unplugging anything.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb(s) are out

  • Have a helper press the brake and turn signals while you watch, or back up close to a wall at night to see what’s not lighting.
  • Use a flashlight to look through the lens and note which section is out (upper/middle/lower).

Step 2: Remove the driver-side taillight housing

  • Open the tailgate.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two visible screws on the inner edge of the taillight (near the tailgate opening).
  • Grip the housing with both hands and pull it straight rearward to pop the alignment clips free.
  • If it’s stuck, gently work around the edge with a plastic trim removal tool (no metal screwdriver).

Step 3: Remove and replace the bulb(s)

  • Locate the bulb socket(s) on the back of the housing.
  • Twist the needed socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wear nitrile gloves).
  • Push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
  • If you have it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not the bulb glass).
  • Reinstall the socket into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Tip: Match the bulb number printed on the old bulb.

Step 4: Test before reinstalling the housing

  • Turn on the parking lights and verify the tail light illuminates.
  • Have a helper press the brake and operate the turn signal to confirm proper operation.
  • If a bulb doesn’t light, remove it and rotate/reseat it, then recheck.

Step 5: Reinstall the driver-side housing

  • Line up the housing’s locating pins with the body sockets.
  • Press the housing straight forward until it fully seats.
  • Reinstall the two screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and tighten snug (do not overtighten).

Step 6: Repeat on the passenger side

  • Repeat Steps 2–5 on the other side using the same Phillips #2 screwdriver, plastic trim removal tool, and flashlight.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify all rear lights: tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and hazard flashers.
  • Make sure both housings sit flush with even gaps.
  • If you see moisture later, recheck that each bulb socket is fully locked and the seal is seated.
