🔧 X1 - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your X1, the outer taillights (in the body) have a rear access panel inside the cargo area. You’ll remove the access cover, pull out the bulb holder, and swap the bulbs on both left and right sides.

Assumption: You’re replacing serviceable rear bulbs (turn signal / reverse / rear fog if equipped). The red tail/brake light may be LED and not bulb-serviceable on some X1 taillight versions.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition fully OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before touching bulbs.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch glass bulb surfaces with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If you see melted plastic, corrosion, or burnt pins, stop and don’t force it.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Torque wrench (2-20 Nm range)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber, PY21W) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Reverse light bulb (W16W / 921) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Rear fog bulb (P21W) - If equipped - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the tailgate and clear the cargo area for room to work.
  • Turn all exterior lights OFF and keep the key/fob away from the vehicle.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo of the bulb holder layout.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the taillight access panel (left side)

  • Use a flashlight to find the taillight service cover behind the left cargo-area trim.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool (a non-scratch pry tool) to pop the access cover open.

Step 2: Remove the bulb holder

  • Locate the bulb holder (the plastic carrier plugged into the taillight).
  • Grip it firmly and rotate it counterclockwise to unlock (usually about 1/8 turn), then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s stuck, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver at the tab—don’t pry hard.

Step 3: Replace the bulb(s)

  • Identify the failed bulb position on the holder (turn signal / reverse / rear fog if equipped).
  • Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Optional: Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector pins only (not the bulb glass).
  • Tip: Wear nitrile gloves to avoid fingerprints.

Step 4: Reinstall the bulb holder and test

  • Insert the holder back into the taillight, making sure it sits flat and aligned.
  • Rotate clockwise to lock.
  • Turn ignition to ON and test the function you replaced (reverse lights require the car in reverse with brakes held; use a helper).
  • If it doesn’t work, remove the holder and reseat the bulb and connector.

Step 5: Repeat on the right side

  • Use the plastic trim removal tool to open the right-side access panel.
  • Repeat bulb-holder removal, bulb replacement, and testing on the right taillight.
  • Tip: Replace left and right bulbs as a pair.

Step 6: If your taillight has no bulb holder (LED version)

  • If you only see a sealed connector and no removable bulb carrier, that circuit is likely LED and not bulb-serviceable.
  • If you must remove the outer lamp assembly to inspect: remove the access cover, then use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet to remove the lamp retaining nuts.
  • Pull the lamp straight rearward carefully, disconnect the connector, and inspect for water/corrosion.
  • Reinstall and tighten lamp nuts evenly: Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Confirm left/right turn signals, reverse lights, and brake lights all work.
  • Make sure both access covers are fully snapped back into place to prevent rattles.
  • If you get a bulb warning on the dash after installing LEDs, you may need correct “CAN-bus” style bulbs (proper load).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
