How to Replace Taillight Bulbs on a 2010-2012 Ford Fusion (Brake, Turn Signal, Reverse)
Step-by-step trunk access instructions with required tools, bulb types, LED housing notes, and torque specs for 2010, 2011, 2012
🔧 Fusion - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Fusion, the rear bulbs are accessed from inside the trunk by removing the trunk side liner and (on many versions) pulling the taillight housing out. You’ll replace the bulb(s) by twisting the bulb socket out of the housing and installing a new bulb without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle area.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before handling; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch a new glass bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Hybrid note: This job does not require high-voltage service, but keep tools away from orange high-voltage cables.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.

- Tip: Take a quick photo of bulb socket positions.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Assumption (so you can proceed): Many Fusions use removable taillight housings with replaceable bulbs; if your taillights are LED and have no twist-out bulb sockets, you’ll replace the complete lamp assembly instead (I included that path below).
Step 1: Remove the trunk side liner
- Use a flashlight to locate the trunk liner behind the taillight area.
- Use a trim removal tool to pop out the plastic push clips.
- If a clip is stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the clip center, then pull the clip out.
Step 2: Remove the taillight mounting nuts
- Locate the taillight’s retaining nuts/studs inside the trunk.
- Use an 8mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the nuts.
- Place the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trunk panels.
Step 3: Remove the taillight housing
- From outside the car, hold the taillight and pull it straight back.
- If it feels stuck, it’s usually held by alignment pins; wiggle gently while pulling straight back (don’t pry hard on the paint).
- Support the housing so it doesn’t scratch the bumper.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket(s)
- Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn by hand and pull it out.
- If you have multiple sockets, remove one at a time so you don’t mix them up.
- Tip: Twist the socket, not the wires.
Step 5: Replace the bulb(s)
- Put on nitrile gloves (helps keep the bulb clean).
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If your bulb type is a “twist-lock” style, insert it and twist to lock (you’ll feel it stop).
Step 6: Reinstall sockets and test before reassembly
- Reinstall each socket into the housing and twist clockwise to lock by hand.
- Turn the car ON (Ready mode not required) and test lights:
- Parking lights (tail lights)
- Brake lights (have someone press the brake, or use a heavy object carefully)
- Turn signals and hazards
- Reverse lights (foot on brake, shift to R briefly)
Step 7: Reinstall the taillight housing
- Align the housing pins with the body grommets and press the lamp straight into place.
- Install the nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to snug them evenly.
- Use a torque wrench (inch-pound): Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall trunk liner and clips
- Reposition the liner.
- Push the clips back in by hand; use a trim removal tool to seat them if needed.
LED taillight variant (if no replaceable bulbs): Replace the complete lamp assembly
- Follow Steps 1–3 to remove the housing.
- Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the tab (use a small flathead screwdriver gently if needed) and pulling apart.
- Install the new lamp assembly, reconnect, then follow Steps 7–8 to finish.
âś… After Repair
- Re-check all rear light functions one more time (tail, brake, signals, reverse).
- Make sure the taillight sits flush with the body and there are no gaps (helps prevent water leaks).
- If a new bulb still doesn’t work, swap it to the other side to confirm bulb vs. socket/wiring.
