Step-by-step trunk access instructions, required tools/parts, safety tips, and post-repair light checks

🔧 Corolla - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You can replace both rear taillight bulbs from inside the trunk by opening the access panels, removing the bulb sockets, and swapping the bulbs. This restores your running lights and brake lights so other drivers can see you clearly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ If bulbs were recently on, let them cool 5-10 minutes.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of incandescent bulbs with bare fingers (skin oils shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the trunk lid securely while you work.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Make sure the headlight switch is OFF.
- Open the trunk and keep a flashlight handy.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the trunk and access the taillight area
- Open the trunk.
- Use a flashlight to look behind each taillight (left and right).
- Remove the small trunk liner access cover (or pull liner back) using a trim panel removal tool (plastic).
- If a clip is stubborn, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver. Go slow to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Remove the taillight bulb socket (each side)
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Find the socket that feeds the red taillight section (this is typically the tail/brake bulb).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a “push-in” style on this lamp).
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Do not touch the bulb glass; use your nitrile gloves.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and close up
- Insert the socket back into the taillight housing.
- Twist the socket clockwise until it locks.
- Reposition the trunk liner and reinstall the access cover using the trim panel removal tool (plastic) as needed.
Step 5: Repeat for the other side
- Repeat Steps 2-4 for the other taillight (left/right) so both bulbs match in brightness and color.
✅ After Repair
- Turn on the parking lights and confirm both rear taillights illuminate evenly.
- Press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights get noticeably brighter.
- If one side still doesn’t work, re-check that the bulb is fully seated and the socket is locked.
