🔧 Accord - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Accord, the rear bulbs are accessed from inside the trunk—no need to remove the entire taillight housing for a basic bulb swap. You’ll remove small trim access panels, twist the bulb socket out, and replace the bulb on both left and right sides.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸 Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- 🔸 Let bulbs cool 5 minutes; they can be hot.
- 🔸 Don’t touch new glass bulbs with bare fingers (skin oil shortens life).
- 🔸 Support the trunk trim clips gently; forcing them can break them.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Flashlight

- Trunk trim clips - Qty: 2-6
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and open the trunk fully.
- Move trunk items out so you can access the side trim areas.
- Take a quick photo of bulb positions first.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the trunk and locate the taillight access area
- Use a flashlight to find the rear corner behind each taillight (left and right sides).
- You’ll see a small trim access door or a carpeted panel section you can pull back.
Step 2: Remove the trunk trim access cover (one side)
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pry the access cover open.
- If a push-clip is holding the carpet, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the clip center, then remove the clip.
- A trim tool prevents torn carpet.
Step 3: Remove the tail/brake bulb socket
- Find the socket that goes into the taillight housing (it will have wires going to it).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand.
- Pull the socket straight out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wiggle gently if tight).
- Push the new bulb fully into the socket until it seats.
- If it’s a glass bulb, avoid touching the glass with bare fingers.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the housing.
- Twist clockwise 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Turn the parking lights ON to verify the tail light works.
- Press the brake pedal (or have someone help) to verify the brake light works.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–5 for the opposite taillight.
Step 7: If you meant the inner trunk-lid bulbs (reverse), replace those too
- Look at the trunk lid trim near each inner light and use a plastic trim removal tool to open the access panel (if equipped).
- Twist the reverse-light socket out by hand (counterclockwise 1/4 turn).
- Replace the bulb, reinstall the socket, then test by putting the car in reverse with the clutch in and brake applied (engine can be OFF, key in ON).
âś… After Repair
- Verify: tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals all function on both sides.
- Reinstall any trunk trim clips and access covers securely.
- If one bulb still doesn’t work, check the fuse next.
