šŸ”§ Ridgeline - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Ridgeline, the rear bulbs sit in the taillight assemblies and can be changed by removing each taillight from the bedside. You’ll remove a couple fasteners, pull the housing straight back, swap the bulb(s), then test all rear lighting.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø If the bulbs were recently on, let them cool to avoid burns.
  • āš ļø Support the taillight so it doesn’t scratch the paint when it releases.
  • āš ļø Do not touch glass bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear stop/tail light bulb (OEM-equivalent) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the taillight fasteners.
  • Have your replacement bulbs ready and keep them clean (gloves help).

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing

  • Turn the lights ON briefly to confirm what’s out (tail/running light vs brake vs turn vs reverse), then turn them OFF again.
  • Different functions can use different bulbs.

Step 2: Remove the left taillight assembly

  • Use 8mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the two taillight mounting bolts at the inner edge (tailgate side).
  • Gently pull the taillight straight rearward to release the alignment pins (do not pry against painted metal).
  • If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool carefully to help start it moving, then pull by hand.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Use a flashlight to identify the correct socket for the bulb you need.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the housing.
  • A ā€œsocketā€ is the plastic holder the bulb locks into.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves and pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (most are a push-in type).
  • Push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
  • Apply a very thin wipe of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry (avoid getting grease on the bulb glass).

Step 5: Reinstall the bulb socket and taillight

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Align the taillight pins and press the assembly straight forward until fully seated.
  • Install the bolts using the 8mm socket, extension, and ratchet, then Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

Step 6: Repeat on the right side

  • Repeat Steps 2-5 for the right taillight assembly using the same tools.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness/color.

Step 7: If your Ridgeline has LED (no replaceable bulb)

  • If you remove the taillight and find no twist-out bulb sockets (or the ā€œbulbā€ is built into the housing), that function is LED and the fix is typically replacing the taillight assembly.
  • If that’s what you’re seeing, tell me which function is out (tail/brake/turn/reverse) and which side, and I’ll guide you through the correct assembly replacement path.

āœ… After Repair

  • Test: tail/running lights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and hazard flashers.
  • Make sure both taillight assemblies sit flush and do not wiggle.
  • Verify there’s no ā€œbulb outā€ warning on the dash (if equipped).

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $70-$140 by doing it yourself!
