🔧 Lancer - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll access the rear lamp sockets from inside the trunk, remove the bulb socket, and swap the bulbs. Replacing both sides at the same time helps keep brightness and color even.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can get very hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new glass bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the trunk lid securely so it can’t fall.

- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear stop/tail light bulb (dual-filament) - Qty: 2
Assumption: You’re replacing the main red stop/tail bulbs (not reverse/turn). Bulb style can vary—match the new bulbs to the old bulbs you remove.
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
- Have your flashlight ready so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open trunk and access the lamp area
- Open the trunk and use a flashlight to locate the rear lamp access area behind the trunk liner.
- If your trunk liner has an access door, open it by hand. If it’s clipped, use a trim panel removal tool (a plastic pry tool that pops clips out without breaking them).
Step 2: Remove the taillight bulb socket (left side)
- Behind the left rear lamp, find the bulb socket that goes into the taillight housing.
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
- If there’s an electrical connector you must unplug first, press the tab and disconnect it by hand. Don’t pull on the wires.
Step 3: Replace the bulb (left side)
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (or twist slightly and pull if it’s a twist-lock style).
- Put on nitrile gloves and install the new bulb into the socket fully seated.
- Inspect the socket seal (rubber ring). If it’s damaged or missing, water can get in.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and test (left side)
- Insert the socket back into the lamp housing, then rotate clockwise to lock.
- Turn the headlight switch on to confirm the taillight works, then press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) to confirm brake light operation.
Step 5: Repeat on the right side
- Repeat Steps 1-4 for the right rear lamp using the flashlight and trim panel removal tool as needed.
Step 6: If you removed the lamp housing (only if needed)
- If your Lancer’s liner access is too tight, you may need to remove the lamp assembly nuts from inside the trunk.
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension to remove the lamp retaining nuts.
- Carefully pull the lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- Reinstall and Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) on the 10mm retaining nuts.
✅ After Repair
- Verify both taillights illuminate evenly with the headlights on.
- Verify both brake lights work when the brake pedal is pressed.
- Reinstall trunk liner/access covers and make sure all clips are fully seated.
- If a bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket and re-seat the bulb (most “new bulb” issues are a bulb not fully seated).
