🔧 Outback - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You can replace the rear taillight bulbs from inside the cargo area without removing the entire lamp assembly. You’ll open the small access doors, twist the bulb sockets out, swap the bulbs, then test all rear lights.

📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Outback on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
• Open the rear hatch for access and better lighting.
• Set your flashlight in the cargo area so you can see behind the trim.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the taillight access door (left side)

• Go to the left rear corner inside the cargo area.
• Use a trim clip removal tool to pop open the small access cover in the side trim.
• If the cover is tight, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver.

Step 2: Remove the bulb socket you’re replacing

• Look inside the opening and find the bulb sockets on the back of the lamp.
• Use nitrile gloves and a flashlight to identify the socket.
• Grip the socket and twist it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise, then pull it straight out by hand.
• A “socket” is the plastic holder the bulb plugs into.

Step 3: Swap the bulb

• Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
• If it’s stuck, use needle-nose pliers gently while pulling straight (don’t crush the glass).
• Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
• Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb; use nitrile gloves.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and test (left side)

• Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock by hand.
• Turn the lights ON and confirm the bulb works:
  • Tail lights: turn headlight switch to parking lights.
  • Brake lights: press brake pedal (a helper makes this easier).
  • Turn signal: turn on left turn signal and verify blinking.
• Turn the lights OFF after testing.

Step 5: Repeat on the right side

• Move to the right rear cargo trim access cover.
• Use the trim clip removal tool to open the access cover.
• Repeat socket removal with your hands, bulb swap, reinstall, and test using the flashlight and nitrile gloves.

Step 6: Reinstall both access doors

• Snap each access cover back into the cargo trim by hand.
• If any trim clips came loose, press them back in firmly by hand.

• Test all rear lighting: tail lights, brake lights, left/right turn signals, and hazard lights.
• Make sure each bulb socket is fully locked; a loose socket can cause intermittent operation.
• If you replaced a turn bulb and it “hyper-flashes” (very fast blinking), the bulb may be wrong type or not seated fully—recheck fit and seating.
