🔧 Suburban - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Suburban, the rear bulbs are accessed by removing each taillight housing from the body. You’ll remove two fasteners, pull the lamp straight back, swap the bulb(s), then reinstall and test.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn all lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Bulbs can be hot; let them cool and wear gloves.
  • ⚠️ Don’t pry on the painted body; pull the lamp straight back to avoid breaking the alignment pins.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T15 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear stop/turn/tail bulb (3157 type) - Qty: 2
  • Rear reverse bulb (921 type) - Qty: 2
  • Rear side marker bulb (194 type) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate so you can access the taillight fasteners.
  • Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillight fasteners

  • Open the liftgate fully.
  • Look at the inboard edge of the taillight (the edge closest to the liftgate opening) for the two retaining screws.
  • Use a flashlight if needed to see the screw heads clearly.

Step 2: Remove the taillight housing

  • Remove the two retaining screws using a Torx T15 screwdriver.
  • Grasp the taillight housing with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it start moving, but do not pry against paint.
  • Tip: Straight back prevents pin damage.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket(s)

  • Find the socket for the bulb you’re replacing (you may have multiple sockets).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the housing.
  • If a socket is tight, use nitrile gloves for better grip.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (most rear bulbs on this lamp are push-in style).
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Use the bulb number printed on the old bulb to match the replacement (common types are 3157 for stop/turn/tail and 921 for reverse, and 194 for side marker).
  • Tip: Don’t touch glass with bare fingers.

Step 5: Reinstall sockets and taillight

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Align the taillight’s guide pins with the body holes, then press the housing straight forward into place.
  • Reinstall the two retaining screws using a Torx T15 screwdriver.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1-5 on the opposite taillight to replace the “other” bulb.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the key to ON and test: parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
  • If a bulb doesn’t work, remove that socket again and confirm the bulb is fully seated.
  • If the new bulb still doesn’t work, the socket may be corroded and may need replacement.
