🔧 Mustang - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Mustang, the outer taillamps are removed from inside the trunk so you can access the bulb sockets. Note: many Mustang GT Premium taillamps use LED brake/turn lights (not replaceable “bulbs”), but the reverse (backup) bulb is replaceable on most setups.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they get hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch new halogen bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the taillamp as you remove it so it doesn’t scratch paint.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 11mm deep socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Plastic trim removal tool set
- Small flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Reverse (backup) light bulb - Qty: 2
- Stop/turn bulb - Qty: 2 (only if your taillamps are incandescent, not LED)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and open the trunk.
- Move trunk contents out of the way so you can reach the rear corners.
- A plastic trim removal tool is a non-marring pry tool used to pop clips without scratching panels.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillamp fasteners inside the trunk
- Use a small flashlight to locate the trunk side trim panel directly behind the taillamp.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently pop the plastic push-clips and peel the trunk trim back enough to reach the taillamp nuts.
Step 2: Remove the taillamp retaining nuts
- Use an 11mm deep socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the taillamp retaining nuts.
- Put the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trunk trim.
Step 3: Remove the taillamp assembly
- From outside the car, hold the taillamp with one hand and pull it straight rearward.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle gently—there are alignment pins that can be snug. Pull straight back, not sideways.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket(s)
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out of the taillamp housing.
- If space is tight, reposition the lamp slightly while supporting it.
Step 5: Replace the bulb (choose the matching option)
- Option A (most common): Reverse/backup bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket using nitrile gloves.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Option B: Stop/turn bulb (only if your taillamp uses a removable bulb)
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket using nitrile gloves.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- If your brake/turn is an LED module, there will be no removable bulb for it—replacement is the full lamp/module.
Step 6: Reinstall the bulb socket(s) and taillamp
- Reinsert the socket into the taillamp and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
- Align the taillamp pins and push the taillamp straight into position.
- Install the retaining nuts using an 11mm deep socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Torque to 5 Nm (4 ft-lbs)
Step 7: Refit the trunk trim
- Press the trunk trim back into place.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool set (or your hand) to line up clips, then press the push-clips in until they seat.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–7 for the other taillamp so both sides match in brightness and color.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON (engine can stay off).
- Test lights: parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
- If a bulb doesn’t work, remove that socket again and confirm the bulb is fully seated.
- Make sure both taillamps sit flush with the body and gaps look even.
