🔧 1500 - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each taillight housing, twist the bulb sockets out, and swap in new bulbs. This restores brake/turn/tail and reverse lighting so you stay safe and legal on the road.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: Your 1500 uses the common incandescent bulbs (not LED housings).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before working on exterior lights.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can get hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new glass bulbs with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the taillight housing so it doesn’t scratch the paint.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Tail/Brake/Turn bulb (3157) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Reverse bulb (921) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the tailgate for access to the taillight screws.
- Lay a microfiber towel on the bumper corner to protect paint if the housing slips.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the driver-side taillight screws
- Open the tailgate.
- Use a Torx T25 screwdriver to remove the two screws on the inboard edge of the taillight (the side facing the tailgate opening).
- Set screws aside somewhere safe.
Step 2: Pull the taillight housing straight back
- Grip the taillight housing with both hands and pull it straight back (not outward).
- If it feels stuck, use a trim clip removal tool to gently help release the alignment pins.
- Pull straight back to avoid breaking pins.
Step 3: Remove the bulb sockets
- Find the sockets on the back of the housing.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it out.
- If a socket is tight, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently assist the twist (don’t pry on the lens).
- A “socket” is the plastic bulb holder you twist out.
Step 4: Replace the bulbs
- For the 3157 (tail/brake/turn) bulb: pull the old bulb straight out of the socket and press the new one in fully.
- For the 921 (reverse) bulb: pull the old bulb straight out and press the new one in fully.
- Apply a very thin film of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry (this helps keep water out).
- Dielectric grease is non-conductive moisture protection.
Step 5: Reinstall sockets and refit the housing
- Insert each socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock.
- Line up the housing’s locating pins with the body grommets, then push the housing straight in until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the two screws using a Torx T25 screwdriver.
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).
Step 6: Repeat on the passenger side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 on the passenger-side taillight.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test: parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
- Confirm both housings sit flush and don’t wiggle.
- If a bulb doesn’t work, remove that socket and make sure the bulb is fully seated and the socket is locked.
