🔧 Tacoma - Tail Light Bulb Replacement

On your Tacoma, the rear bulbs sit in sockets behind each tail lamp assembly. You’ll remove the tail lamp, twist out the bulb socket (the plastic holder the bulb locks into), swap the bulb, then reinstall everything.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights off and let bulbs cool before touching them.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the tail lamp when it comes loose so it doesn’t scratch the paint.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Trim removal tool
  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Stop/Tail light bulb (7443) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Reverse light bulb (921) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
  • Put on clean nitrile gloves before handling new bulbs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access and identify the side

  • Open the tailgate for working room.
  • Use a small flashlight to look at the inner edge of the tail lamp (near the tailgate) and find the fasteners.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp fasteners

  • Remove the two tail lamp fasteners on the inboard edge using a Phillips #2 screwdriver (some trucks use 10mm socket heads instead).
  • Set the fasteners aside where they won’t get lost.

Step 3: Pull the tail lamp assembly straight back

  • Grip the tail lamp and pull it straight rearward (away from the bedside).
  • If it’s stuck on the locator pins, use a trim removal tool carefully at the edge and wiggle it free.
  • Pull straight back to avoid breaking pins.

Step 4: Remove the correct bulb socket

  • Look behind the lamp and find the socket for the bulb you’re replacing.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it out.
  • Common locations (as you face the back of the lamp): stop/tail is usually the larger red bulb position, turn is typically the amber position (if equipped), reverse is the clear/white lens section.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (use clean nitrile gloves).
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If the bulb type is different than what came out, stop and match the new bulb to the old one before installing.

Step 6: Reinstall the bulb socket

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock it.
  • Make sure the socket seal is seated evenly (prevents moisture inside the lamp).

Step 7: Test the light before reassembly

  • Turn the ignition to ON (engine off is fine).
  • Test the function you replaced:
    • Tail lights: turn parking lights ON.
    • Brake lights: press brake pedal (use a helper, or hold with a stick).
    • Turn signal: switch on that side.
    • Reverse: hold brake and shift to Reverse (keep wheels blocked).

Step 8: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly

  • Align the locator pins and press the lamp straight forward into place.
  • Reinstall the two fasteners using a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

Step 9: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2–8 on the other tail lamp so both sides match in brightness and color.

âś… After Repair

  • Confirm tail, brake, turn, and reverse lights all work on both sides.
  • Check that both tail lamps sit flush and don’t wiggle.
  • If a bulb doesn’t work: remove it and re-seat it; also verify you replaced the correct bulb position.
