🔧 Suburban - Tail Light Bulb Replacement

On your Suburban, the tail lamp assembly comes off from the outside after you open the liftgate and remove the two fasteners on the inside edge. Once the lamp is loose, you twist the bulb socket out, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything carefully so the alignment pins don’t break.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Let bulbs cool before touching; they can be hot.
  • đź‘“ Wear safety glasses; the lamp can pop free suddenly.
  • 🛑 Support the tail lamp as you pull it out so it doesn’t scratch paint or fall.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job, but keep the light switch OFF while working.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Plastic trim tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail light bulb(s) (fitment-matched) - Qty: 1-4
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • If you’re not sure which bulb is out, have a helper press the brake and turn signals while you watch the rear lights.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulbs you’re replacing

  • Use a flashlight and check which function is out: tail/parking, brake, turn signal, reverse, or side marker.
  • Different functions can use different bulbs.

Step 2: Open the liftgate and locate the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the liftgate and look at the inboard edge of the tail lamp (the side closest to the liftgate opening).
  • Use a flashlight to find the two fasteners (usually 10mm).

Step 3: Remove the tail lamp fasteners

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension to remove the two fasteners.
  • Set the fasteners somewhere safe so they don’t roll away.

Step 4: Pull the tail lamp assembly straight back

  • Hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight back (away from the truck).
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim tool to gently help it start moving—do not pry hard on the painted surface.
  • Pull straight back to protect the alignment pins.

Step 5: Remove the bulb socket(s)

  • Behind the lamp, find the socket for the bulb you’re replacing.
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand (use nitrile gloves for grip) and pull it out of the housing.
  • If your Suburban has mostly LED tail lamps: you may only find a removable socket for the reverse light; the other functions may not use replaceable bulbs.

Step 6: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (use nitrile gloves).
  • Push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
  • Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry (this helps keep moisture out).

Step 7: Reinstall the socket(s) and test before reassembly

  • Insert the socket into the lamp and turn clockwise until it locks by hand.
  • Before putting the lamp back on, turn the lights ON and test the repaired function (or have a helper press the brake / signals).

Step 8: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly

  • Line up the alignment pins and press the lamp straight into place by hand.
  • Install the two fasteners using the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
  • Torque: GM does not call out a common service torque for these in basic bulb service; tighten snug and stop—do not overtighten.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify tail/park lights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and hazards all work.
  • Check that the lamp sits flush with the body and that there are no gaps (this prevents water leaks).

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$200 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$60 (parts only)

You Save: $70-$140 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.

Quick check (so I match the right bulbs):

  • Which functions are out—brake/turn, reverse, tail/parking, or side marker?
  • Do your rear lamps look like they’re mostly LED (very crisp, dotted light bars), or do they look like traditional bulbs?
