🔧 CX-5 - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your CX-5, the “taillight” bulbs are usually inside the outer rear lamp assemblies (on the body, not the liftgate). You’ll access the bulb socket from behind the lamp, swap the bulb, then test the lights before reassembly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and switch all exterior lights OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they get very hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves; avoid touching the bulb glass (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the lamp so it doesn’t scratch paint when it releases from the clips.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Trim panel removal tool
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- Torque wrench (in-lb capable)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear stop/tail bulb (7443) - Qty: 2
- Rear turn signal bulb (7440) - Qty: 2
- Rear reverse bulb (921) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for better access and lighting.
- Do a quick light check to identify which bulb you’re replacing: tail lights (parking lights on), brake lights (press brake), turn signal (hazards on), reverse lights (key ON, shift to reverse with help).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which rear bulb is out
- Turn on parking lights to check the tail light element, then use hazard flashers to check turn signals.
- If unsure, replace the same bulb on both sides.
Step 2: Remove the access cover inside the cargo area (outer lamp)
- At the rear corner inside the cargo area, use a trim panel removal tool to pop off the small service cover behind the taillamp.
Step 3: Remove the outer taillamp retaining nuts
- Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the retaining nuts.
- Set nuts aside where they won’t drop into the body cavity.
Step 4: Release the lamp from its body clips
- Support the lamp with one hand and pull it straight rearward to release the locator pins/clips.
- If it’s stuck, gently work around the edge using a trim panel removal tool (do not pry against painted surfaces hard).
Step 5: Remove the bulb socket
- Twist the correct bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the lamp housing.
- Use nitrile gloves before handling the bulb.
Step 6: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out from the socket and push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
- If your bulb is a wedge-base type, it does not “twist” into the socket— it pushes in/out.
Step 7: Test the light before reinstalling the lamp
- Reinsert the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock by hand.
- Turn on the relevant light function to confirm it works (parking lights/brake/turn).
Step 8: Reinstall the lamp assembly
- Align the lamp’s locator pins with the body grommets and push the lamp straight forward until it seats flush.
- Install the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (in-lb capable).
Step 9: Reinstall the interior access cover
- Press the access cover back into place by hand.
Step 10: Repeat for the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–9 for the opposite taillamp if you’re replacing both sides.
âś… After Repair
- Verify tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazards all work.
- Confirm both lamps sit flush to the body and there are no gaps (prevents water leaks).
- Recheck the repaired bulb after your next drive to ensure it still works.
