🔧 Tucson - Tail Light Bulb Replacement
On your Tucson, the rear lamps are split between the body (outer lamp) and the liftgate (inner lamp). Bulb replacement is usually done by removing a small access cover or removing the lamp assembly, then twisting the bulb socket out.
Quick check: some rear functions may be LED (not serviceable as a “bulb”) depending on which function/lamp you’re trying to fix.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸 Turn the light switch to OFF and remove the key before starting.
- 🔸 Let bulbs cool before touching; they can be hot.
- 🔸 Don’t touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
- 🔸 Support the liftgate securely while working around it.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear light bulb (match the bulb number from your old bulb base) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (small packet) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate and keep it fully raised.
- Decide which lamp you’re servicing: outer (on the body) or inner (on the liftgate).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which “taillight bulb” you mean
- With the liftgate open, have a helper press the brake, then try turn signals and reverse (engine ON, foot on brake for reverse).
- Note which function is out: tail/running light, brake, turn signal, or reverse.
- Tip: Take a quick phone video first.
Step 2: Access the lamp (choose the correct location)
- Outer lamp (on the body): open the small interior access cover near the lamp using a plastic trim removal tool set.
- Inner lamp (on the liftgate): remove the small cover on the liftgate trim using a plastic trim removal tool set.
- A “trim tool” is a plastic pry tool used to pop panels without scratching them.
Step 3: Remove the lamp fasteners (if your Tucson requires lamp removal)
- If you can reach the bulb socket directly through the access opening, skip to Step 4.
- If the socket is blocked, remove the lamp nuts/screws:
- Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 3" extension (1/4") to remove the lamp retaining nuts (outer lamp).
- Use a Phillips screwdriver #2 to remove any retaining screws (common on the liftgate/inner lamp).
- Pull the lamp straight back to release the locating pins.
- Tip: Pull straight—don’t twist the lamp.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket
- Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
- Pull the socket straight out of the housing.
- If it’s tight, wiggle gently—don’t force the wiring.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Match the new bulb to the old one using the number stamped on the old bulb base.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and lamp
- Insert the socket back into the housing and turn clockwise to lock.
- If you removed the lamp, align the locating pins and press the lamp straight in.
- Reinstall nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet (snug only; do not overtighten).
- Reinstall screws using a Phillips screwdriver #2 (snug only).
- Snap the access cover back in using your hands.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–6 for the opposite tail lamp so both sides match in brightness and color.
✅ After Repair
- Turn on running lights and verify both rear tail lights illuminate evenly.
- Test brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
- If you still have a bulb-out warning, re-check the socket is fully locked and the bulb is fully seated.
- If the lamp function is LED and doesn’t use a replaceable bulb, the fix is usually a lamp assembly replacement.
