🔧 Frontier - Tail Light Bulb Replacement
On your Frontier, the rear bulbs are accessed by removing each tail lamp housing from the outside. Once the housing is loose, you twist the bulb sockets out, swap the bulb(s), and reinstall the housing.
Quick question (so I list the exact bulbs correctly): Are you replacing the red tail/brake bulb, the turn signal bulb, the reverse bulb, or all of them on both sides?
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool before touching them (they can get hot).
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch glass bulbs with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Pull the tail lamp straight back—don’t pry hard on the painted body.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the tailgate to access the tail lamp screws.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open access and locate the fasteners
- Open the tailgate and stand at the rear corner of your Frontier.
- Look at the inside edge of the tail lamp (the edge closest to the tailgate opening).
- Use a small flashlight to spot the two retaining screws.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp screws
- Use a #2 Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws.
- Set the screws somewhere safe so they don’t drop into the bumper area.
- Torque to factory spec on reassembly (snug only; do not overtighten).
Step 3: Pull the tail lamp housing straight back
- Grip the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it start moving at the seam. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps release clips without damaging paint.)
- Once the locating pins pop free, support the housing so it doesn’t hang by the wiring.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket(s)
- Reach behind the housing and identify the socket for the bulb you’re replacing.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- Tip: One socket per bulb position.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some types may need a slight wiggle).
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
- Before reinstalling, look at the old bulb and note the printed bulb number—buy the same number for the correct fit and brightness.
Step 6: Test the bulb before reassembly
- Reinsert the socket into the housing and twist clockwise to lock by hand.
- Turn the lights on to confirm operation:
- Have a helper press the brake pedal for brake lights, or shift to Reverse with the brake held for reverse lights (stay safely parked).
Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp housing
- Align the housing locating pins with the body grommets.
- Push the housing straight forward until it seats flush.
- Install the two screws using a #2 Phillips screwdriver.
- Torque to factory spec (snug only; do not strip the plastic).
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–7 on the other tail lamp.
âś… After Repair
- Verify: tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights all work correctly.
- Check that both tail lamp housings sit flush and don’t wiggle.
- If a bulb doesn’t work, remove it and confirm the socket is fully locked and the bulb is seated.
