🔧 Camry - Tail Light Bulb Replacement

You can replace your Camry’s rear bulbs by accessing the lamp sockets from inside the trunk. The outer bulbs are behind the trunk side-liners, and some bulbs may be in the trunk-lid lamp panel depending on which light is out.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; use gloves to prevent early failure.
  • ⚠️ Support the trunk lid securely so it can’t fall while you work.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4")
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Tail/brake light bulbs - Qty: 2
  • Rear turn signal bulbs - Qty: 2
  • Reverse light bulbs - Qty: 2
  • Trunk trim panel clips - Qty: 2-6

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
  • Tip: Match the new bulb to the old bulb. The bulb type is usually stamped on the bulb base.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the trunk side trim

  • Put on safety glasses and work gloves.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the trunk side liner behind each tail light.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any plastic clips holding the liner so you can pull the liner back.

Step 2: Replace the outer tail light assembly bulbs (left and right)

  • Behind the liner, find the bulb sockets going into the tail lamp housing.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some bulbs may require a slight twist to unlock).
  • Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
  • Reinstall the socket into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.

Step 3: Replace trunk-lid bulbs (if equipped)

  • If the light that’s out is on the trunk lid (often reverse or inner tail light), look for a small access cover or trim panel on the trunk lid.
  • Remove screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver (if present), then pull the access cover down.
  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand, remove it, and swap the bulb.
  • Reinstall the socket and reinstall the access cover using the Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 4: If you need to remove the tail lamp housing (only if access is blocked)

  • With the trunk liner pulled back, remove the tail lamp retaining nuts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • Carefully pull the tail lamp housing straight rearward to release the locating pins.
  • Replace the needed bulb(s), then reinstall the housing.
  • Reinstall the 10mm nuts and Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

Step 5: Reinstall trunk trim

  • Push the trunk liner back into place.
  • Reinstall the clips by pressing them in by hand (use the trim clip removal tool to align if needed).

✅ After Repair

  • Turn on the parking lights and confirm both tail lights are on.
  • Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) and confirm both brake lights work.
  • Turn on the hazards and confirm both rear turn signals flash correctly.
  • Shift to reverse with the brake applied (key ON) and confirm both reverse lights work.
  • Tip: A fast-blinking signal means a bulb is still out.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
