🔧 Tacoma - Tail Light Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each tail light housing from the bed side, twist out the bulb socket, and swap the bulb. This is a simple job, but the housings are held in with alignment pins that need a straight pull to avoid cracking the lens.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool for a few minutes; they get very hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves—oil from fingers can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Pull the tail light straight back; prying can crack the lens.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the left tail light housing
- Open the tailgate.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws on the inside edge of the left tail light.
- Grip the housing with both hands and pull it straight back to release the alignment pins.
- If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim tool to gently start it moving (don’t pry on the lens edge).
Step 2: Remove the bulb socket
- Locate the socket for the tail/brake bulb (usually the upper socket in the housing).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the glass). Helps keep moisture out.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and housing
- Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Align the housing’s pins with the body holes and push straight in until fully seated.
- Install the two screws using the Phillips #2 screwdriver and tighten snug (do not overtighten).
Step 5: Repeat on the right side
- Repeat Steps 1–4 for the right tail light.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the lights on and confirm the tail lights illuminate on both sides.
- Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) and confirm both brake lights are bright.
