🔧 Wrangler - Tail Light Bulb Replacement

On your Wrangler, the rear tail lamp housings are held on with two screws per side. Once the housing is off, you’ll twist out the bulb socket, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of incandescent bulbs with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the tail lamp so it doesn’t scratch paint when it comes loose.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • #2 Phillips screwdriver
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Tail/stop/turn bulb (3157) - Qty: 2
  • Reverse light bulb (3156) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the inner tail lamp screws.
  • Dielectric grease helps prevent socket corrosion.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the correct screw tool

  • Look at the two screws on the inside edge of one tail lamp (visible with the tailgate open).
  • If the screw is a cross shape, use a #2 Phillips screwdriver.
  • If the screw is a star shape, use a Torx T20 screwdriver.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp screws (one side)

  • Use a #2 Phillips screwdriver or Torx T20 screwdriver (whichever fits) to remove the two screws.
  • Set the screws aside somewhere safe.
  • Torque: No published torque spec; reinstall snug (do not overtighten).

Step 3: Pull the tail lamp housing straight back

  • Grip the housing and pull it straight rearward.
  • If it’s stuck on the alignment pins, gently work around the edge using a plastic trim tool.
  • Pull straight back to avoid breaking pins.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket

  • Locate the bulb socket(s) in the back of the housing.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock, then pull it out.
  • If needed, use a flashlight to see the socket tabs clearly.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wear nitrile gloves).
  • Install the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Apply a light smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass).

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and housing

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Line up the housing alignment pins and push the lamp straight into place.
  • Reinstall the two screws using a #2 Phillips screwdriver or Torx T20 screwdriver.
  • Torque: No published torque spec; tighten snug only.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2–6 for the opposite tail lamp.

✅ After Repair

  • Test tail lights: turn on parking lights and confirm both sides illuminate.
  • Test brake lights: press the brake pedal and confirm both sides brighten.
  • Test turn signals and hazards: verify normal flash speed.
  • If you replaced reverse bulbs, shift into reverse (engine on, brake held) and confirm both reverse lights work.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
