🔧 Grand Cherokee - Tail Light Bulb Replacement (Left & Right)
On your Grand Cherokee, the “tail light” can mean the running/brake bulb, turn signal bulb, or reverse bulb—depending on which function is out. The basic job is removing each outer tail lamp assembly, swapping the bulb(s), and reinstalling the lamp without breaking the alignment pins.
Quick check before we start (2 questions): 1) Are your rear tail lamps factory LED (no replaceable bulbs), or do you have replaceable bulb sockets? 2) Which functions are out: running/brake, turn signal, reverse, or all?
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Let the lamps cool before handling bulbs to avoid burns.
- 🔌 Turn ignition OFF and remove the key fob from the vehicle area to prevent lighting wake-ups.
- 🧼 Do not touch new glass bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- 🧲 Support the tail lamp as you pull it free—don’t yank on the wiring.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to P.
- Turn the light switch to OFF.
- Open the liftgate for access to both outer tail lamps.
- Tip: Take a photo of socket positions.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm you have replaceable bulbs (not sealed LED)
- Use a flashlight to look behind the outer tail lamp area (with liftgate open).
- If you see round twist-lock sockets, you have replaceable bulbs and can continue.
- If the lamp has no removable sockets (sealed housing), skip to Step 8 (LED assembly replacement).
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining screws
- With the liftgate open, locate the two screws on the inboard edge of the tail lamp (they’re visible in the liftgate jamb).
- Use a Torx T25 screwdriver to remove both screws.
- Place screws on a shop towel so they don’t roll away.
Step 3: Pull the tail lamp assembly straight back
- Grip the lamp housing with both hands and pull straight rearward.
- If it’s stuck, use a trim panel tool set to gently start the separation at the edge, then pull straight back.
- Tip: Pull straight back to protect alignment pins.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket(s)
- Identify the socket for the bulb you’re replacing.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand; if tight, use a nitrile gloves grip and try again.
- Pull the socket out of the lamp housing.
Step 5: Replace the bulb (match the old one exactly)
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some take a firm tug).
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
- Use nitrile gloves to avoid touching the glass.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 6: Reinstall the socket(s)
- Insert the socket back into the housing.
- Twist clockwise by hand until it stops (snug; do not over-tighten).
Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly
- Align the locating pins/grommets and push the lamp straight forward until fully seated.
- Reinstall the two screws using a Torx T25 screwdriver.
- Tighten screws snugly (do not strip the plastic).
Step 8: If you have sealed LED tail lamps (no bulbs)
- Remove the two retaining screws using a Torx T25 screwdriver.
- Pull the lamp straight back and unplug the connector (use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if a lock tab needs help releasing).
- Install the replacement LED tail lamp assembly, plug in the connector, seat the pins, and reinstall the screws.
Step 9: Repeat for the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–7 (or Step 8 if LED) on the other tail lamp.
âś… After Repair
- Turn ignition ON and test: parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights.
- If a new bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket and re-seat it, then check for corrosion.
- If you get a bulb-out warning with LEDs, the lamp type may require the correct OEM-style assembly.
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $10-$80 (parts only, depending on bulb vs LED assembly)
You Save: $80-$200 by doing it yourself!
