On your Ranger’s 2.3L turbo engine, spark plugs wear over time and can cause misfires, rough idle, poor fuel economy, and hard starting. This job is straightforward because it uses coil-on-plug ignition (one ignition coil per cylinder) and the plugs are serviced from the top of the engine.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Work on a fully cool engine to avoid burns and damaged threads in the aluminum cylinder head.
  • 🔌 If you disconnect the battery, use a 10mm socket and isolate the negative cable so it can’t spring back.
  • 🔥 Keep tools and rags away from hot turbo/charge pipes if the truck was recently driven.
  • ⚠️ Do not use anti-seize on spark plug threads unless the plug manufacturer specifically requires it; Ford-style plated plugs are typically installed dry.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely (at least 1 hour after driving).
  • Optional but recommended: disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • If you’re chasing a misfire, write down any cylinder-specific code (example: P0302 = cylinder 2) before starting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Grip the engine appearance cover and pull upward to release it from the rubber grommets.
  • If any corner feels stuck, use a small flat trim tool to gently pry up at the edge.

Step 2: Disconnect and remove ignition coil #1

  • Locate the first ignition coil on the top of the valve cover.
  • Press the electrical connector tab and unplug it (use the small flat trim tool if the tab is stubborn).
  • Remove the coil hold-down bolt using an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Twist the coil boot slightly, then pull the coil straight up and out.
  • Don’t yank on the wiring.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs) when reinstalling the coil bolt.

Step 3: Clean the spark plug well

  • Before removing the plug, blow out the tube (spark plug well) using a compressed air blow gun.
  • This prevents dirt from falling into the cylinder when the plug comes out.

Step 4: Remove the spark plug

  • Install a 5/8" spark plug socket on a 3/8" drive extension (6") and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Lower the socket straight down onto the plug and loosen it counterclockwise.
  • Lift the spark plug out carefully with the socket.
  • If it feels unusually tight, stop and work it gently back and forth to avoid thread damage.

Step 5: Check and prep the new spark plug

  • Use a feeler gauge (spark plug gap gauge) to verify the plug gap matches the specification for the plug set you bought (many Motorcraft-style plugs come pre-gapped—verify, don’t force-bend).
  • Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease inside the ignition coil boot only (dielectric grease is a silicone grease that helps prevent moisture and boot sticking).
  • Do not apply grease to the plug’s electrode or threads.

Step 6: Install the new spark plug

  • Start the plug by hand using the 5/8" spark plug socket and extension only (no ratchet at first) to avoid cross-threading.
  • Once it’s fully seated, torque it using a 3/8" drive torque wrench (5-30 ft-lbs range).
  • Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
  • Hand-starting prevents expensive thread damage.

Step 7: Reinstall the ignition coil

  • Push the coil straight down until it fully seats on the spark plug.
  • Install the coil bolt with an 8mm socket, then torque with a 1/4" drive torque wrench (30-150 in-lbs range).
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 8: Repeat for the remaining cylinders

  • Repeat Steps 2 through 7 for the other three ignition coils and spark plugs.
  • Keep parts organized so each coil bolt goes back to its original location.

Step 9: Reinstall engine cover and reconnect battery (if disconnected)

  • Press the engine cover back onto its grommets until it seats evenly.
  • If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket and tighten it snug.

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. It should run smooth with no shaking.
  • If you had a check-engine light for misfire, recheck for codes if the light returns (a loose coil connector is a common mistake).
  • Take a short test drive and confirm normal power under light acceleration.
