📋 Before You Begin

• Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
• Let the engine cool fully (at least 1 hour after driving).
• If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative battery terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
• Gather your new plugs and keep them in the box until you’re ready to install them (prevents drops and dirt).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)

• Pull the cover straight up to release the rubber grommets, or remove any fasteners using a 10mm socket.
• Set it aside where it won’t get stepped on.

Step 2: Unplug and unbolt the ignition coils

• Each cylinder has an ignition coil (the coil is the “plug top” unit that sits on the spark plug).
• Press the connector lock tab and unplug the coil connector by hand. Don’t pull on the wires.
• Remove the coil hold-down bolt using a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
• Twist the coil gently, then pull it straight up and out.

Step 3: Clean around the spark plug wells

• Use compressed air blow gun to blow debris out of each spark plug well.
• Wipe any loose dirt with shop towels.

Step 4: Remove the old spark plugs

• Install the 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket on a 3/8" ratchet with the needed 3/8" extensions and a 3/8" swivel/universal joint if required.
• Turn counterclockwise to loosen, then lift the plug out with the spark plug socket.
• If a plug feels extremely tight, stop and re-check that the engine is cold.

Step 5: Install the new spark plugs

• Compare the new plugs to the old ones to confirm matching length and seat type.
• Start each plug by hand (use the spark plug socket with an extension but no ratchet at first) and turn clockwise several full turns.
• If it doesn’t thread in smoothly, back it out and try again. Cross-threading is expensive.
• Torque each spark plug using a torque wrench: Torque to 15–20 Nm (11–14 ft-lbs).
• Do not adjust the gap on iridium plugs unless the plug instructions specifically say to.

Step 6: Reinstall the ignition coils

• Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot (a pea-sized smear inside the rubber only).
• Push the coil straight down until it seats fully on the spark plug.
• Install the coil bolt using a 10mm socket, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 8–10 Nm (71–89 in-lbs).
• Reconnect each coil connector until it clicks.

Step 7: Reinstall the engine cover and reconnect the battery

• Reinstall the engine cover by pressing it onto the grommets, or tighten fasteners using a 10mm socket.
• If disconnected, reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench and tighten securely.

• Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds. It should run smooth (no shaking).
• If the check engine light comes on or it runs rough, shut it off and re-check each coil connector is fully clicked in.
• Take a short test drive, then re-check for any unusual smells or sounds.
