🔧 Spark Plugs - Replacement

Your Camry uses a hybrid 2.5L engine with coil-on-plug ignition, so each spark plug sits deep in the cylinder head under the ignition coils. This job is straightforward, but the engine bay is tight and you must keep dirt out of the plug wells.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disable the hybrid system before working. Turn the car OFF, remove the key/fob from the vehicle, and keep it away from the car.
  • Wait at least 5 minutes after shutdown before touching ignition components.
  • Do not crank the engine with ignition coils unplugged.
  • Work on a cool engine only. Hot aluminum threads can be damaged easily.
  • Keep debris out of the plug holes. Dirt can fall into the cylinders and cause engine damage.
  • If you disconnect the 12V battery, you may lose some memory settings.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • 3-inch extension
  • 6-inch extension
  • Spark plug socket 14mm with rubber insert
  • Torque wrench
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Compressed air nozzle
  • Dielectric grease
  • Anti-seize compound
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plugs - Qty: 4

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Turn the vehicle OFF and remove the key/fob from the cabin.
  • If the engine cover or intake duct blocks access, remove them first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting

  • Use your hands to lift off the plastic engine cover if equipped.
  • If the air duct blocks access, use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the duct fasteners.
  • Set all clips and fasteners aside in order.

Step 2: Unplug the ignition coils

  • Use your fingers or needle-nose pliers to release each coil connector lock.
  • Unplug the connectors carefully so the tabs do not break.
  • Pull on the connector, not the wires.

Step 3: Remove the ignition coils

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove the coil hold-down bolts.
  • Lift each coil straight up. A gentle twist helps if the rubber boot is stuck.
  • Keep each coil in order if you plan to reuse them.

Step 4: Clean the spark plug wells

  • Use compressed air nozzle to blow dirt out of each plug well before removing the plugs.
  • This keeps debris from falling into the cylinders.
  • Clean first, remove second.

Step 5: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Use a spark plug socket 14mm with rubber insert, extension, and ratchet to loosen each plug.
  • Turn counterclockwise and remove each plug carefully.
  • If a plug feels tight, stop and work it back and forth gently to avoid thread damage.

Step 6: Inspect and gap the new spark plugs

  • Compare the new plugs to the old ones to confirm the correct type.
  • Check the gap only if needed. Many modern plugs come pre-gapped.
  • Apply a tiny amount of anti-seize only if the plug maker specifically allows it. Most Toyota plugs are installed dry.
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot.

Step 7: Install the new spark plugs

  • Start each plug by hand using the spark plug socket and extension only.
  • Thread them in several turns by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten each plug to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
  • Hand-start every plug.

Step 8: Reinstall the ignition coils

  • Push each coil straight down onto its spark plug.
  • Install the coil bolts with a 10mm socket and tighten to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect each electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 9: Reinstall the intake parts and engine cover

  • Reinstall any ducting removed earlier using the 10mm socket.
  • Snap the engine cover back into place.
  • Make sure no tools or loose parts are left in the engine bay.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and let it idle smoothly.
  • Listen for misfires, ticking, or rough running.
  • Check that all connectors are fully seated.
  • If the check engine light is on, scan for codes and clear them after verifying the repair.
  • Recheck the plug area after a short test drive.
