🔧 Q5 - Spark Plug Replacement

Replacing the spark plugs restores proper ignition, smooth idle, and fuel economy. On your Q5, the plugs sit under the ignition coils on top of the engine and can be changed from above.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧊 Work on a cold engine to avoid burns and damaged threads.
  • 🔌 Keep the ignition OFF and the key/fob away from the vehicle.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; dirt can fall into plug wells.
  • đźš« Do not use anti-seize on modern plated spark plug threads unless the plug maker specifically says to.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required, but if you choose to disconnect it, use a 10mm socket and be aware radio/settings may reset.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Trim removal tool
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension set (3" and 6")
  • 16mm spark plug socket (thin-wall, magnetic or rubber insert)
  • Torque wrench (5–60 Nm range)
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Compressed air blow gun
  • Dielectric grease
  • Ignition coil puller (specialty)
  • 10mm socket

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plugs (OEM equivalent for 2.0T) - Qty: 4
  • Ignition coil (optional, replace failed coils only) - Qty: 0-4

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool fully (at least 1 hour after driving).
  • 🧼 Use compressed air blow gun to blow dust off the top of the engine before opening anything.
  • 🔋 Optional: If you prefer extra safety, disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

  • Use a trim removal tool and your hands to pull the engine cover straight up (it’s held by rubber grommets).
  • Set the cover aside where it won’t get scratched.

Step 2: Unplug the ignition coils

  • Use a flashlight to locate the 4 ignition coils on top of the engine (one per cylinder).
  • Use a small flathead screwdriver to release each electrical connector lock (be gentle—Audi connector tabs can be brittle).
  • Pull the connector straight off each coil.

Step 3: Remove the ignition coils

  • Blow around each coil with a compressed air blow gun so dirt doesn’t fall into the spark plug tube.
  • Pull each coil straight up by hand; if it’s stuck, use an ignition coil puller (specialty) (a coil puller is a small lever tool that lifts the coil without cracking it).
  • Tip: Twist slightly, then pull up.

Step 4: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Insert a 16mm spark plug socket (thin-wall) with a 3/8" drive extension and 3/8" drive ratchet into the plug well.
  • Turn counterclockwise to loosen and remove the spark plug.
  • Repeat for all 4 cylinders.

Step 5: Install the new spark plugs

  • Place a new plug into the 16mm spark plug socket and lower it into the well.
  • Thread the plug in by hand using only the extension (no ratchet at first) to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench (5–60 Nm range) to tighten each plug (a torque wrench tightens to an exact setting so you don’t strip threads).
  • Torque to 23 Nm (17 ft-lbs).
  • Do not adjust the gap on iridium/platinum plugs unless the plug maker explicitly allows it.

Step 6: Reinstall the ignition coils

  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot (this helps prevent sticking and moisture intrusion).
  • Push each coil straight down until fully seated.
  • Reconnect each coil electrical connector by pushing it on until it clicks/locks.

Step 7: Reinstall the engine cover

  • Align the engine cover over its mounting points.
  • Press down firmly with your hands to seat the grommets.

âś… After Repair

  • đźš— Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds; it should run smooth with no shaking.
  • 🔎 If you get a check engine light or misfire, re-check every coil connector is fully clicked in.
  • 🧰 If you have a scan tool, check for misfire codes and clear any stored codes after confirming the fix.
  • 🛣️ Take a short test drive and confirm normal power and no warning lights.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $300-$550 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $60-$140 (parts only)

You Save: $240-$410 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-1.5 hours.
