🔧 Elantra - Spark Plug Replacement

On your Elantra, the spark plugs sit under the ignition coils on top of the engine. Replacing them restores smooth starting, idle quality, fuel economy, and helps prevent misfires.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a completely cool engine to avoid burns and prevent thread damage in the aluminum cylinder head.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the spark plug holes; debris can fall into the cylinder and cause damage.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on wires; disconnect by pressing connector locks first.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the ignition OFF and the key away from the car while working.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension set (3" and 6")
  • 5/8" (16mm) spark plug socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive, 5–30 ft-lb range)
  • Compressed air blow gun
  • Feeler gauge set (mm/in)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plugs (OEM-spec iridium) - Qty: 4
  • Dielectric grease (silicone) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and open the hood.
  • Let the engine cool fully (at least 1 hour after driving).
  • Have your new plugs ready and kept clean in the box until install.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

  • Grip the plastic engine cover and pull straight upward to release the rubber grommets.

Step 2: Disconnect ignition coil connectors

  • Use a small flathead screwdriver only if needed to gently help lift the connector lock tab.
  • Press the tab and unplug each coil electrical connector.
  • Don’t pry hard—tabs break easily.

Step 3: Remove the ignition coils

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove each ignition coil hold-down bolt.
  • Pull the coil straight up to remove it from the spark plug tube.
  • Set coils aside in order (so they go back to the same cylinder).

Step 4: Clean out the spark plug wells

  • Use compressed air blow gun to blow out dirt from each spark plug hole before removing plugs.
  • Clean holes prevent debris falling into the engine.

Step 5: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Use a 5/8" (16mm) spark plug socket, 3/8" drive extension, and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove each plug.
  • If a plug feels extremely tight, stop and work it out slowly to avoid damaging threads.

Step 6: Check the new spark plug gap (don’t force it)

  • Use a feeler gauge set (mm/in) to verify the gap matches the spec on the spark plug box for your Elantra.
  • If they’re iridium/platinum style, avoid bending the fine center electrode (most come pre-gapped).

Step 7: Install the new spark plugs by hand first

  • Place the new plug into the 5/8" (16mm) spark plug socket and lower it into the hole with the 3/8" drive extension.
  • Thread it in by hand using only the extension (no ratchet) until it seats. This helps prevent cross-threading (starting the plug crooked).

Step 8: Torque the spark plugs

  • Use a torque wrench (3/8" drive, 5–30 ft-lb range) with the 5/8" (16mm) spark plug socket to tighten each plug.
  • Torque to 14.7–24.5 Nm (10.8–18.1 ft-lb)

Step 9: Reinstall ignition coils

  • Apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease (silicone) inside each coil boot (the rubber part). Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps prevent moisture and sticking.
  • Push each coil straight down until fully seated.
  • Install coil bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet, then finish with the torque wrench.
  • Torque to 9.8 Nm (7.2 ft-lb)

Step 10: Reconnect connectors and reinstall the engine cover

  • Plug each coil connector back in until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the engine cover by aligning it and pressing down firmly over the grommets.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds. It should run smooth with no flashing check-engine light.
  • If you feel a misfire (shaking) or get a check-engine light, shut it off and recheck coil connectors and that each coil is fully seated.
  • Optional: If you have a scan tool, clear any old misfire codes and confirm none return.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $40-$120 (parts only)

You Save: $130-$410 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-1.5 hours.
