🔧 Escape - Spark Plug Replacement

Replacing the spark plugs restores a strong spark, which helps your Escape start easier, idle smoother, and maintain fuel economy. On the 2.5L, the plugs sit under the ignition coils on top of the engine, so it’s a straightforward job with basic hand tools.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a completely cool engine to avoid burned hands and to protect aluminum cylinder head threads.
  • Keep dirt out of the spark plug holes—debris can fall into the cylinder and cause damage.
  • Do not pull on the wiring; release connectors by the lock tab.
  • Battery disconnect is not required, but it’s OK to disconnect the negative terminal if you want extra safety.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 5/8" spark plug socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension set (3" and 6")
  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive, 5-30 ft-lb range)
  • Flat trim tool
  • Compressed air blow gun
  • Feeler gauge set (0.040"-0.060")
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plugs (OEM-equivalent for 2.5L) - Qty: 4
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully (warm aluminum threads can strip easier).
  • Assumption: Stock ignition coils and OEM-style plated spark plugs (no anti-seize needed).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine appearance cover (if equipped)

  • Use a flat trim tool to carefully pop up any push-pin fasteners, or use a 10mm socket if your cover uses bolts.
  • Lift the cover straight up and set it aside.

Step 2: Unplug and remove the ignition coils

  • On each coil, press the electrical connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off.
  • Use an 8mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolt.
  • Twist the coil gently and pull straight up to remove it from the spark plug well.
  • Tip: Keep coils in order, one per cylinder.

Step 3: Clean the spark plug wells

  • Put on safety glasses.
  • Use a compressed air blow gun to blow dirt out of each spark plug well before removing the plug.

Step 4: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Install the 5/8" spark plug socket on a 3/8" drive extension (6") and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Turn counterclockwise to loosen and remove each spark plug.
  • If a plug feels very tight, stop and work it out slowly to protect threads.

Step 5: Check the new plug gap (do not force-adjust iridium tips)

  • Use a feeler gauge set (0.040"-0.060") to verify the gap matches the specification on the spark plug box for your Escape.
  • If the plug is an iridium/platinum type, do not pry on the tiny center tip.

Step 6: Install and torque the new spark plugs

  • Start each plug by hand using the 5/8" spark plug socket and 3/8" drive extension (6") only (no ratchet at first) to avoid cross-threading.
  • Once finger-tight, use a torque wrench (3/8" drive, 5-30 ft-lb range) to tighten each plug to Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lb).
  • A torque wrench is a tool that “clicks” at the correct tightness so you don’t over-tighten.

Step 7: Reinstall coils and connectors

  • Apply a small dab of dielectric grease inside each coil boot (the rubber spark plug “socket”). Dielectric grease helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier.
  • Push each coil straight down until fully seated.
  • Install the coil bolt using an 8mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet, then tighten to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb).
  • Reconnect each electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the engine cover (if equipped)

  • Reinstall the cover and fasteners using a 10mm socket or the flat trim tool (for push-pins), depending on your setup.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds. It should run smooth with no shaking.
  • Take a short test drive and verify there’s no hesitation under light acceleration.
  • If the check engine light turns on or it runs rough, re-check that each coil connector is fully seated and each coil is bolted down.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $40-$90 (parts only)

You Save: $160-$410 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-1.5 hours.
