š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine fully cool (at least 1 hour after driving).
- Open the hood and remove any loose items around the engine bay.

šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect battery (recommended)
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal and remove it.
- Tuck the cable aside so it canāt spring back onto the post.
Step 2: Remove the engine cover
- Grasp the cover and pull straight upward to release the rubber grommets.
- Use a flashlight to confirm nothing is still clipped or snagged.
Step 3: Unplug the ignition coil connectors
- Each cylinder has an ignition coil on top (this ācoil-on-plugā design puts the coil directly over the plug).
- Use a small flat screwdriver to gently release the connector lock, then unplug each coil connector.
Step 4: Remove the ignition coils
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the coil hold-down bolt for each coil.
- Pull the coil straight up with a gentle twist.
- Set coils aside in order (so you can put them back in the same cylinder if youāre reusing them).
- When reinstalling coil bolts later: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
Step 5: Clean the spark plug wells
- Use compressed air blow gun to blow out each spark plug well.
- Blow out dirt before removing the plug.
Step 6: Remove the old spark plugs
- Install a 5/8" spark plug socket (rubber insert) on a 3/8" drive extension (6") and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Turn counterclockwise to loosen, then remove the plug.
- If a plug feels stuck: stop, tighten slightly, then loosen again slowly.
Step 7: Check and set the gap on the new plugs
- Use a feeler gauge (0.028" blade) to check the gap.
- Target gap for the 1.5L turbo is typically 0.028" (0.70 mm).
- If adjustment is needed, adjust carefully; do not pry on the iridium tip.
- Most new plugs are pre-gappedāstill verify.
Step 8: Install the new spark plugs
- Place the new plug into the 5/8" spark plug socket so the rubber insert holds it.
- Thread it in by hand using only the extension (no ratchet at first) to avoid cross-threading.
- Once seated, use the torque wrench to tighten: Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs)
- Do not use anti-seize unless the plug maker specifically requires it.
Step 9: Reinstall coils and connectors
- Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease inside each coil boot (this helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier).
- Push each coil straight down until fully seated.
- Install coil bolts with a 10mm socket, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
- Reconnect each electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 10: Reinstall engine cover and reconnect battery
- Press the engine cover back onto its grommets.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench and snug it firmly.
ā After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
- Listen/feel for misfires (shaking, flashing check engine light). If the light flashes, shut it off and recheck coil connectors.
- Take a short test drive and confirm smooth acceleration.
- If you have a scan tool, clear any stored misfire codes and recheck for pending codes after the drive.
