  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely (at least 1 hour if it was hot).
  • Open the hood and remove any loose items around the engine bay.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm battery terminal wrench and position it so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently lift if needed, then pull the cover upward to release it from the rubber grommets.
  • Pull straight up to avoid cracking it.

Step 2: Unplug the ignition coil connectors

  • Locate the 4 ignition coils on top of the engine (one per cylinder).
  • Use a small pick tool to lift the connector lock (if equipped), then press the tab and unplug the connector by hand.
  • Wiggle the connector—don’t yank wires.

Step 3: Remove the ignition coils

  • Remove the coil hold-down bolts using a 10mm socket with a ratchet 3/8".
  • Lift each coil straight up to remove it. If it’s stuck, twist gently while pulling.
  • Set coils aside in order (so they go back to the same cylinder).
  • Torque (coil bolts, install): 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
  • “Ignition coil” makes the spark—handle gently.

Step 4: Blow debris out of the spark plug wells

  • Before removing any plugs, use compressed air with blow gun to blow dirt out around each spark plug hole.
  • This prevents grit from falling into the cylinder when the plug comes out.

Step 5: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Install a spark plug socket 5/8" (16mm) onto a extension 6" or extension 12" (use what fits best), then attach your ratchet 3/8".
  • Turn counterclockwise to loosen and remove each plug.
  • If a plug feels extremely tight, stop and apply steady pressure—don’t force it.

Step 6: Check and set the gap on the new plugs

  • Use a spark plug gap gauge (wire style) to verify the gap matches the spec on the under-hood emissions label or plug box.
  • For the 2.0L turbo, most OEM-style plugs are typically around 0.028–0.031 in (0.70–0.80 mm).
  • Only adjust if the plug manufacturer allows it for that plug type.
  • Wrong gap can cause misfires under boost.

Step 7: Install the new spark plugs (by hand first)

  • Place a new plug into the spark plug socket 5/8" (16mm) so it holds the plug securely.
  • Lower it into the hole using an extension 6" and turn it clockwise by hand (no ratchet at first) to avoid cross-threading.
  • Once hand-tight, use a torque wrench 3/8" drive to tighten.
  • Torque (spark plugs): 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)
  • Hand-threading prevents expensive thread damage.

Step 8: Reinstall the ignition coils

  • Apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease inside each coil boot (the rubber tube). Dielectric grease helps prevent moisture and eases future removal.
  • Push each coil straight down onto the spark plug until fully seated.
  • Install coil bolts using a 10mm socket, then tighten with a torque wrench 3/8" drive.
  • Torque (coil bolts): 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)

Step 9: Reconnect electrical connectors and battery

  • Plug each ignition coil connector back in until it clicks. Re-engage any connector locks by hand.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm battery terminal wrench and snug it securely.

Step 10: Reinstall the engine cover

  • Align the cover with the mounting points and press down firmly by hand until it seats.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds. It should run smooth with no shaking.
  • Listen for a clicking/air-leak sound around the coil area (a coil not fully seated can cause misfires).
  • If you have a scan tool, check for misfire codes and confirm none return after a short test drive.
  • Take a 10–15 minute drive and do a few gentle accelerations; avoid full-throttle pulls until you’re confident it’s running clean.
