🔧 Spark Plugs - Replacement

On your Tacoma, the spark plugs are mounted under the ignition coils on top of the engine. This job is straightforward, but the engine should be completely cool so the plugs do not seize or damage the threads in the cylinder head.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool fully before starting. Hot aluminum threads can strip easily.
  • Do not drop dirt into the spark plug holes.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you want to avoid accidental starts. This is optional, but recommended.
  • Use only the correct spark plug type and gap for your Tacoma.
  • Work one cylinder at a time so the coil connectors stay organized.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 6-inch extension
  • Spark plug socket, 9/16-inch or 14mm with rubber insert
  • Torque wrench
  • Feeler gauge
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Compressed air or air blower
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plug set - Qty: 4
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure the engine is cold.
  • If disconnecting the battery, remove the negative cable first.
  • Keep tools and debris away from the open plug wells.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting

  • Use your hands to lift off the plastic engine cover, if equipped.
  • If the intake tube blocks access, use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp and remove the intake duct.
  • Keep all clamps together.

Step 2: Disconnect the ignition coils

  • Unplug each coil connector one at a time.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver if the connector lock needs a gentle release.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the coil hold-down bolt.
  • Lift each ignition coil straight out.

Step 3: Clean around the spark plug wells

  • Use compressed air or an air blower to remove dust and grit around each plug hole.
  • This keeps debris from falling into the engine.
  • Clean before removing plugs.

Step 4: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Use a spark plug socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen each plug.
  • Turn counterclockwise and remove each plug carefully.
  • If a plug feels stuck, stop and work it slowly to avoid thread damage.

Step 5: Check and prepare the new spark plugs

  • Use a feeler gauge to check the gap on each new plug if needed.
  • Install the plugs only if they match the required specification for your Tacoma.
  • Put a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot.
  • Do not overapply grease.

Step 6: Install the new spark plugs

  • Thread each plug in by hand using the spark plug socket and extension.
  • This prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by starting the plug crooked.
  • Once seated, use a torque wrench to tighten each plug to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the ignition coils

  • Push each coil straight down onto its spark plug.
  • Install the coil bolt with a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten the coil bolt snugly. If your torque wrench reaches this range, use 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect each coil electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 8: Reassemble the intake and engine cover

  • Reinstall any intake ducting you removed.
  • Tighten hose clamps with a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the engine cover by pressing it into place.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for smooth idle.
  • Check for a check engine light or misfire.
  • If the engine runs rough, recheck coil connector seating and plug installation.
  • Take a short test drive and confirm normal acceleration.
